FLANDREAU – The Volga Blue 13-14 Teener baseball team drove away from Flandreau on Sunday as state champions.
With a 9-1 victory over West Central, Volga won the VFW 13-14 Class State A baseball tournament this weekend in Flandreau.
Layson Lucas earned the victory by allowing only one run over the first three innings with Parker Puetz coming in and shutting out West Central over the last four innings.
Volga started its march to the championship on Friday with an 11-1 victory over Dakota Valley.
In that game, Kashas Vanderwal pitched a complete game to earn the victory. Vanderwal only needed 47 pitches in the five-inning game due to the 10-run rule.
On Saturday, Volga beat Madison, 6-4, in the semifinals as Jake Ziegler earned the win with by going 5 1/3 innings with Parker Puetz picking up the final five outs to earn the save.
Volga was also awarded the sportsmanship award by the umpires for the weekend.
Volga was coached this year by Layne Lucas, Landon Stevens and Damon Becker.
They ended their season with a record of 22-4.
