Wilderness complete weekend sweep of Blizzard

BROOKINGS – Nick Altmann scored on assists from Ashton Altmann and Tyler Vold with 2:14 remaining as the MN Wilderness held off the Blizzard for a 5-4 victory in NAHL Central Division action Saturday night at Larson Ice Center.

Minnesota’s Jesse Farabee opened the scoring with a goal at the 3:36 mark of the first period. Zach Mills and Louis Roehl were credited with assists.

Mills lit the lamp 76 seconds into the second as Michael Zuffante and Farabee assisted to make it 2-0.

Brookings got on the board via Taylor Schneider’s goal – assisted by Paul Cotter and Cade Borchardt – with 16:24 to go in the second.

However, the Wilderness moved ahead 4-1 as Ashton Altmann scored with 1:04 left in the second and Charlie Parker found the back of the net 98 seconds into the third. Farabee and Vold assisted on the first goal, and Tim Nicksic and James Crossman on the second.

The Blizzard rallied after that.

Nicholas Cardelli scored on assists from Brandon Kruse and Brenden Stanko with 13:11 to play and on a power play on assists from Schneider and Borchardt with 11:15 to go.

Chase Brand’s tally with 4:22 showing on the clock knotted the score at 4-all. Doug Larson and John Siebenaler assisted on the equalizer.

Luke Kania made 30 saves to earn the win in goal. Brookings goalie Josh Boyko stopped 29 shots in 58:23 of action.

The third-place Blizzard (24-19-3-1, 52 points) and second-place Wilderness (26-16-4-2, 58 points) face off again Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in Cloquet, Minn.
