Wilmot edges Lake Preston in Swiftel Center Classic

BROOKINGS – The Wilmot, Canby, Minn., and Deuel boys, and Langford Area and Ethan girls each picked up a win on Day 2 of the Swiftel Center Classic on Thursday.

The three-day basketball event concludes today.

On the girls’ side, Tiospa Zina takes on Centerville at noon, Webster plays Potter County at 1:30 p.m., West Central faces Florence-Henry at 6 p.m., and Sioux Valley and Estelline conclude play with a 7:30 p.m. matchup. For the boys, Tiospa Zina takes on Florence-Henry at 3 p.m. and Bon Homme faces Hot Springs at 4:30 p.m.

Thursday’s games

BOYS

 Wilmot 72, Lake Preston 68

Dylan Jurgens scored a game-high 22 points, including a key 3-point play late in the game, as the Wolves edged the Divers.

Jurgens added nine boards and three blocks. He grabbed an offensive rebound following a missed free throw and converted the putback, getting fouled in the process. His ensuing charity toss made it 70-64 with 1:13 to play.

Lake Preston twice possessed the ball trailing by three points down the stretch, but couldn’t find the equalizer.

The Wolves shot 51 percent (25-of-49), including a 10-of-19 clip from 3-point range.

Andre Rios added 15 points, Braden Conrad 10, Rishawn Rios and Jacob Barse both nine, and Avery Heminger seven.

The Divers shot just 38.4 percent (28-of-73) but grabbed 25 offensive rebounds en route to a 44-33 advantage on the glass.

Paydon Casper totaled 20 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists before fouling out.

Byron Bumann contributed 10 points, nine assists, four rebounds and four steals. Jasper Denison had 10 points and seven boards. Jack Hasche (seven rebounds), Allen Strande (five rebounds) and Tate Larsen each chipped in with seven markers.

Both teams came out hot as Lake Preston led 27-21 after 8 minutes. Wilmot pulled even at 41-all at halftime, and the score was tied at 54-54 through three periods.

Lake Preston (1-4) takes on Deuel in the Entringer Classic on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Brookings High School.

Riley Kockelman (22) and Zach Durfee (18) combined for 40 points to lead the Lancers.

Canby opened up a 22-7 lead after a quarter and pushed the margin to 41-14 at halftime.

Kockelman went 5-of-8 from 3-point range while adding 11 rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Durfee grabbed nine boards and dished out four assists.

The Lancers shot 51.1 percent (24-of-47) from the field while limiting the Redmen to 28.6 percent (16-of-56). Canby out-rebounded Estelline 43-26.

The Redmen’s Marcis Hausman finished with 11 points, six boards, three steals and two assists before fouling out.

Gonzalo Gutierrez contributed 10 points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds.

Estelline (0-4) faces Oldham-Ramona/Rutland in the Entringer Classic on Saturday at noon at Brookings High School.

Preston Homan notched a double-double and the Cardinals held off the Warriors.

Homan had game-high totals of 17 points and 16 rebounds to go with two blocks and a pair of assists. Zach Stoltenburg chipped in with 13 markers.

St. Francis was ahead 10-5 after a quarter and 26-19 at halftime. Homan scored 13 points in the third quarter to help Deuel grab a 33-31 advantage heading to the fourth, and the Cardinals led the entire final period.

Maphiy Horse Looking and Jadis Metcalf both finished with nine points for the Warriors. Jaylen Bear Robe added eight markers and Chase Bolts seven.

GIRLS

 Langford Area 50, Lake Preston 44

The Lions used a 10-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters, and then controlled the action in the rest of the way en route to the victory.

Langford’s Ady Dwight posted a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds while adding three assists, three blocks and a pair of steals.

Addy Taylor contributed 13 points. Chesney Olson scored eight points and Janaeda Hesse added seven as both players corralled nine boards.

Dwight scored down low with 1:30 to go in the third and Maddie Reints added a free throws with 6 seconds left to knot the score at 29-all.

Dwight and Hesse opened the fourth with back-to-back buckets, before Olson converted two foul shots to put the Lions ahead 35-29.

The Divers cut the deficit to three – 39-36 – after Meriah Flegel hit a 3-pointer and Ashlyn DeKnikker had a bucket following an Olivia Christensen steal with 3 1/2 minutes remaining.

Olson answered with a pair of charity tosses and Taylor added two more to make it 43-36 with 3:04 showing on the clock.

Lake Preston never got closer than five points the rest of the way.

The Divers opened the game on an 11-2 run. They were up 13-8 after a quarter and 21-20 at halftime.

DeKnikker recorded a double-double with a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. She chipped in with five of the team’s 16 steals and two assists.

Flegel had 12 points, Lexi Larsen seven and Christensen six. 

Christensen totaled four steals, and Flegel and Larsen added three apiece.

Lake Preston (2-3) plays host to Castlewood on Tuesday.

Karly Gustafson outscored the Cubs on her own, dropping in 19 points in 23 minutes of action, as the Rustlers rolled.

Gustafson added six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Jessica Bartscher had 13 points.

Ethan had 23 steals and held Alcester-Hudson to 26.3 percent (5-of-19) shooting.

Gustafson (12) and Bartscher (10) combined for 22 first-half points as the Rustlers were ahead 20-4 after a quarter and 37-7 at halftime. Ethan shot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) over the first 16 minutes.

The Cubs had nearly twice as many turnovers – 29 – as points.

Julie Dickau and Elizabeth Hallaway both finished with six markers.
