BROOKINGS – Aberdeen nearly doubled up the Blizzard in shots on goal en route to a 7-1 Central Division win on Saturday night at Larson Ice Center.
The first-place Wings fired 44 shots to Brookings’ 25 as they scored once in the first period; added two second-period goals; and then, tacked on four more in the third to improve to 35-7-2-1.
Brad Beslisle opened the scoring midway through the first period off assists from Adam Pitters and Riley Murphy.
Shawn Kennedy found the back of the net with 7:38 remaining in the second before Nic Sicoly lit the lamp less than 2 minutes later to make it 3-0, Wings.
With 3:55 on the clock, Bud Winter netted the puck for what turned out to be the Blizzard’s lone goal of the night as Gabe Wahl and Ryan Reid picked up the helpers.
In the third, Pierson Brandon pushed the Aberdeen lead to 4-1 less than 90 seconds in, and then, John Sladic netted back-to-back goals before Murphy’s goal with less than 3 minutes to play provided for the final margin.
Matt Vernon earned the win in goal with 24 saves while Jack Caruso stopped 37 shots for Brookings.
The Blizzard, 9-34-2-1, play host to Bismarck on Friday and Saturday. The puck drops at 7:05 both nights.
