BROOKINGS — After a big eighth inning, the Brookings Cubs staved off a ninth-inning comeback from Milroy (Minnesota) on Thursday night at Bob Shelden Field and came away with a 9-7 victory and improved to 4-1 on the season.

BROOKINGS — After a big eighth inning, the Brookings Cubs staved off a ninth-inning comeback from Milroy (Minnesota) on Thursday night at Bob Shelden Field and came away with a 9-7 victory and improved to 4-1 on the season.

The score was tied 3-3 heading into the eighth inning and the Cubs scored six runs in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Kreutner led off the inning with a double and Jamison Honkomp followed with a single. Both runners eventually scored on wild pitches to make it 5-3. Chase McDaniel then hit an RBI single and a few batters later Dagen Schramm hit a two-run single to make it 8-3. The final run of the inning came on a Kreutner RBI single.

In the top of the ninth Milroy loaded the bases with nobody out and scored a run on a passed ball. The Yankees then scored another run on a bases loaded walk and a two more runs on a single with one out. Mason Bebensee then forced a pop out and line out to end the game.

Milroy scored the first runs of the game top of the third with a two-run home run. Brookings got one run back in the bottom of the inning when Austin Koenig led off the inning with a solo home run. The Cubs then took the lead in the fourth on a two-run single from Jess Bellows. Milroy tied the game in the sixth with an RBI double.

Brookings had 12 hits as a team. Kreutner was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Bellows was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Schramm was 1-for-5 with two RBIs and Koenig was 1-for-4 with an RBI. McDaniel was 1-for-5 with an RBI.

Craig Lasley got the start for Brookings and pitched the first six innings. He gave up three earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Kenny Negron was awarded with the win after pitched two innings and giving up no runs on two hits with one walk and no strikeout. Henry Hammrich pitched a third of an inning and gave up four runs, three earned, on one hit with one strikeout and three walks before Bebensee got the final two outs.

Brookings will host a pair of games next week as the Cubs take on Renner on Monday and Baltic on Wednesday. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
