BROOKINGS – The Bandits split a Legion doubleheader with Yankton on Tuesday at Bob Shelden Field, winning the opener 6-1 but then falling 5-2 in the nightcap.

BROOKINGS – The Bandits split a Legion doubleheader with Yankton on Tuesday at Bob Shelden Field, winning the opener 6-1 but then falling 5-2 in the nightcap.

Brookings (8-10) competes in the Battle of Omaha Tournament beginning Thursday.

Game 1

 Brookings 6, Yankton 1

Mason Bebensee tossed a five-hitter and the Bandit offense batted around in the bottom of the first to get off to a fast start.

Bebensee struck out five and walked one. Post 12’s lone run was unearned.

Max Kjelden singled with one away in the opening frame. Jackson Krogman doubled and Jamison Honkomp walked to load the bases.

Jake Ammann came through with an RBI single. Sam Hardin drew a walk to force in Krogman.

Honkomp was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice.

Daniel Messerli’s two-out walk plated Ammann to make it 3-0.

On the third, Ammann reached on an error and Hardin singled. Consecutive fielder’s choices left runners on the corners.

Courtesy runner Payton Theodosopoulos took home on a double steal and Messerli swiped second, pushing the margin to 4-0.

Yankton’s Cody Oswald doubled in the fifth and moved to third on an error on the play. Austin Wagner followed with a sacrifice fly to get Post 12 on the board.

Post 74 put up a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.

Kjelden reached on an error with two away and Krogman walked. Honkomp stroked and RBI single and Krogman also scored on an error on the play to provide for the final margin.

Ammann and Kjelden both finished 2-for-4.

Yankton’s Samuel Kampshoff gave up six runs – three earned – on seven hits and five walks with four strikeouts in six innings. Oswald went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Post 12 scored four runs in the top of the seventh after Post 74 knotted the score at 1-all in the sixth.

The Bandits’ Daniel Messerli threw six innings of no-hit ball, surrendering one run with seven strikeouts and three walks. He totaled 97 pitches.

Yankton’s Connor Teichroew allowed two runs on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Drew Ryken got the final two outs.

Joe Gokie drove in a pair of runs.

Lincoln Hardin took the loss after giving up four runs – three earned – on three hits with a strikeout and a walk in the seventh.

Payton Theodosopoulos doubled, with Henry Hammrich, Max Kjelden, Jackson Krogman and Josh Devine notching singles. Jamison Honkomp walked twice.

Theodosopoulos and Krogman scored.
