BROOKINGS — The Brookings Figure Skating Club’s 29th annual ice show, "Skating Through the Decades," takes center ice this weekend at the Larson Ice Arena. The show features a large cast of over 60 members, ranging from pre-kindergarten to high school seniors.

Performance show times are April 6 at 7 p.m. and April 7 at 2 p.m. Advance show tickets are available for purchase at Brookings Hy-Vee’s customer service counter and cost $5 for K-12 students and $7 for adults. Tickets may also be purchased at the door, costing $7 for K-12 students and $9 for adults. Children younger than kindergarten age are free.

"Skating Through the Decades" is a family friendly show that consists of two acts. This year’s theme offers audiences a chance to reminisce while skaters perform to music from the 1950s to the 2010s. It follows a radio DJ-style narration while skaters perform choreography to familiar songs from each decade.

“The annual ice show is really a chance for Brookings Figure Skating Club’s members to showcase their talent and skills,” said Ice Show Director Beth Wainman. “Our skaters put a lot of time into practicing their routines with our coaches. It’s always fun to see the final product on ice.”

While this is Wainman’s first year directing the club’s ice show, she’s no stranger to the production. A Brookings Figure Skating Club graduate, Wainman was an ice show performer last spring as well as an assistant coach. This year she’s joined by ice show coaches Dana Martens, Liz Kelm, Shonterra Haas and Brynn Grommerisch.

In addition to choreography, the production also involves costume changes, props and colorful sets that accompany the music theme.

“Our parents and skaters volunteer a lot of time and energy to bring those additional elements together for the show,” said Lilly Estling, BFSC’s 2024 ice show chair. “We’re really a volunteer-led organization. From coordinating the kids in the back of house to selling flowers to celebrate our skaters post-show to decorating and setting up the photo backdrops in the lobby, none of it happens without all of us working together.”

That also includes fundraising. Once again BFSC members are selling tickets for $10 each for the spring gift card raffle. A drawing will be held at during the April 7 performance for two $500 Visa gift cards. Proceeds benefit the club and enable BFSC to not only put on the annual ice show, but to also offer other programming such as the annual holiday skating exhibition and try-skating-for-free events. Purchasers need not be present to win the raffle.

The annual ice show is a partnership between the Brookings Figure Skating Club and the City of Brookings Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department.
