Brookings High School marching band excels at Festival of Bands

On Oct. 5, the Brookings High School marching band showcased its talent and determination at the Festival of Bands in Sioux Falls.

The band earned second place in prelims, making them the highest-scoring South Dakota band in their highly-competitive class. Their performance was further highlighted by receiving the caption award for Outstanding Drum Majors, acknowledging the leadership and skill of their field commanders.

The band’s show, titled "Writings on the Wall," tells a story of division, conflict, and the desire for change. Through music and movement, the performers explore themes of struggle and resilience that resonated with the audience.

Band director Isaac McMahon described the show as not just a performance, but an important message of unity in today’s often divided society.

Despite facing challenging windy conditions that threatened to disrupt their props, the band performed with skill and resilience.

With the help of dedicated band parents who held the props in place, the students maintained their focus and delivered a performance that earned them a score in the top 10 of all bands, allowing them to advance to finals.

Drawing the first spot in the finals, the Brookings band once again proved themselves with a strong showing. They ultimately finished the day in sixth place out of 26 competing bands, including regional powerhouses from a four-state region. Their success is a testament to their hard work and dedication.

McMahon reflected on the day, stating, “This was the most competitive Festival of Bands I have ever seen. I am incredibly proud of how the band rose to the challenge.” His sentiments resonate with the band’s commitment to excellence and the spirit of camaraderie that drives their performances.

Looking ahead, the Brookings High School Marching Band is set to travel to the prestigious Youth in Music competition this weekend at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. After last year’s success as a finalist, the band is eager to deliver another standout performance.

With their passion for music and unwavering determination, the Brookings High School Marching Band continues to make their mark, representing their school and community with pride. As they prepare for the next competition, all eyes will be on this talented group of young musicians as they aim for even greater heights.
