BROOKINGS — The Brookings High School marching band made a big impression at the Big Sioux Review on Sept. 28, showcasing their talent and dedication with a performance that earned them top honors.

The band’s show, titled “Writings on the Wall,” tells a story of division, conflict, and the desire for change. Through music and movement, the performers explore themes of struggle and resilience that resonated with the audience. Band director Isaac McMahon described the show as not just a performance, but an important message of unity in today’s often-divided society.

Competing against several other talented groups, the band clinched first place in their class. But their achievements didn’t stop there — the band also secured the prestigious Sweepstakes Award, presented to the ensemble with the highest overall score, regardless of class.

“This achievement reflects the group’s hard work and commitment,” McMahon said. “The students put so much into every performance, and it really showed in how the judges and audience reacted. We’re so proud of how the kids have taken ownership in the show.”

The band’s success was underscored by additional accolades. Brookings was recognized for Best Wind Section, Best Percussion, and Best Drum Majors.

Drum major Alex Diersen expressed his excitement: “Winning these awards is a testament to the teamwork and dedication of everyone in the band. We all really connect with the show this year, which shows through in our rehearsals and performances.”

The Big Sioux Review, hosted by the Brandon Valley Band, is known for its competitive spirit and for its warm and supportive atmosphere. The Brandon community’s love for music creates an encouraging environment for all participating bands, enhancing the experience for both performers and spectators alike.

Parents, friends, and fellow students filled the stands to support the band, creating an energizing atmosphere that fueled their performance. The pride within the Brookings community was evident following the event, as many shared congratulatory messages. This achievement motivates the band more than ever to continue improving and making their community proud.

The band competes at the Festival of Bands in Sioux Falls on Oct. 5. “It’s the closest thing we have to a marching band state championship,” says McMahon. “We’re looking forward to performing alongside other top groups from the region.” They will also perform for the community throughout Homecoming week, including the parade and football game. Their homecoming halftime performance may be the final home show of the season.
