Cayo, King honored by Summit League

ELMHURST, Ill. – South Dakota State’s Chase Cayo and Rachel King swept the Summit League Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors, as announced Tuesday.

It marked the second award of the season for Cayo, a sophomore from St. Michael, Minn. King, a junior from St. Michael, Minn., was honored for the first time this season and the third time in her career.

The Jackrabbit men have had a runner honored in each of the five weeks they’ve competed this season – Kyle Burdick (Sept. 12 and Oct. 3), Cayo (Sept. 26 and Oct. 17) and Lukas Nelson (Sept. 5).

Cayo placed 67th out of 292 runners with an 8K clocking of 24 minutes, 13.6 seconds at the Pre-National meet in Louisville, which featured eight top-30 nationally-ranked teams.

The time was the fastest for a Jackrabbit this season and Cayo’s career best by more than a minute.

SDSU was 29th out of 41 teams.

King finished 71st amongst 297 runners in the 6K with a time of 20:55.9 at the Pre-National meet in Louisville, which featured nine top-25 nationally-ranked teams.

The time was the fastest in the Summit League this year and 6 seconds of her personal best.

The Jackrabbits ended up 40th out of 43 teams.

The Summit League Cross Country Championships are Saturday, Oct. 28, in Vermillion.
