Chutes split doubleheader against Sioux Falls East

Brookings wins first game, but drops second at Bob Shelden Field on Wednesday night

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Post 74 Chutes Junior Legion team split a doubleheader against Sioux Falls East at Bob Shelden Field in Brookings on Wednesday night.

The Chutes fell to 1-3 on the season and will return to action when they travel to Renner Post 307 for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. on June 13.

Game 1: Brookings 6, Sioux Falls East 4

The Chutes scored the first six runs of the game and held on late to earn a victory in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

Brookings scored first when Nolan Wagner reached on a single and scored on a two-out double by Jay Harris in the bottom of the second inning. The Chutes added to their lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third inning that began with back-to-back walks by Talon Hyde and Gavin Hammrich and ended with Wagner’s second RBI single of the game.

Up 2-0, Brookings doubled its lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a groundout by Tre Christopherson and an RBI triple by Cooper Schneider.

The Chutes added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring on an error and a sacrifice fly by Kysin Reuer but Sioux Falls East made a run in the late bottom of the fourth scoring four runs on errors before Breck Wilson finished the game.

Wilson threw all seven innings allowing four unearned runs on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Wagner went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs scored and three RBI. Harris went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, a run and an RBI. Christopherson went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI. Cooper Schneider went 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Ryder Anderson and Hammrich each drew two walks and scored a run. Hyde drew a walk and scored a run.

Game 2: Sioux Falls East 14, Brookings 3 (5 Inn.)

Sioux Falls East scored eight times in the first inning to set the tone in a 14-3 win that ended in five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Sioux Falls East scored its first two runs on a wild pitch and a passed ball in the first inning and scored two more runs on wild pitches before Hammrich hit Cash Moet with a pitch with the bases loaded to make it a 5-0 game.

Christopherson came out of the bullpen to get the next two outs but Brody Schafer cleared the bases with a triple to put Sioux Falls East up 8-0.

Callaway Weeks and Creighton Childress each drove in a run with singles in the top of the second inning and Caleb Bumann drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it an 11-0 game in the top of the third.

Hyde and Hammrich each hit one-out singles to set up Wagner’s RBI groundout in the third inning but Sioux Falls East scored runs on an error and a wild pitch before Bumann drove in a run to put Sioux Falls East up 14-1.

Hammrich tripled in the bottom of the fifth inning and scored on a ground out by Wagner. Harris and Rauer followed up with singles and Vince Doblar drew a walk before Anderson grounded out to drive in the final run of the game.

Hammrich started and allowed six earned runs on one hit and four walks while facing the first six batters of the game. Christopherson allowed five earned runs on five hits and two walks with a strikeout and Schneider allowed three unearned runs on three hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts.

Hammrich went 2-for-3 with a triple, a stolen base and a run scored. Rauer went 2-for-3. Christopherson went 1-for-4 with a double. Schneider was 1-for-3 with a double. Hyde went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Wagner went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Harris went 1-for-1 with a walk and a run scored. Doblar and Ryder Anderson each drew a walk.
