BROOKINGS — The Mission of the Month for April at the Mission Coffeehouse at First Lutheran Church is Brookings Area Camp Adventure.

Brookings Area Camp Adventure is a barrier-free day camp available for two separate, one-week sessions each summer for children and adolescents ages 6 to 21, who have a neurological or sensory impairment, communication disorder, mental illness or physical disability.

The camps are separated into two camps: ages 6-13 and 14-21. Camp Adventure is a nonprofit organization fiscally represented by the Brookings Interagency Council and is funded in part by the Brookings Area United Way. Additional funding comes from Brookings-area businesses, organizations, individuals and camper fees.

Campers will learn responsibility, develop an appreciation for the outdoors, have new experiences and learn new skills, be recognized for one’s achievements, gain self-confidence and a degree of independence, promote emotional and social growth by acquiring socialization by interacting with peers and counselors, learn concepts of courtesy, cooperation, honesty and dependability, learn to control emotions and learn and display responsible and appropriate behavior.
