BROOKINGS COUNTY — A Sunday afternoon motorcycle accident sent an Arlington man to a hospital with unknown injuries, according to a Monday news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

David Leamons, 64, wasn’t wearing a helmet, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote in the release, adding that alcohol may have played a role as well. The incident occurred south of Arlington at the intersection of U.S. highways 81 and 14 and was reported at 3:11 p.m.

Crews found Leamons had been driving his 1972 Honda CB750 westbound on U.S. 14 near the intersection of U.S. 81 when Leamons explained the motorcycle’s axle locked up and he was ejected from the bike. Leamons was taken to the emergency room at Brookings Health System by Arlington Ambulance.

This incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office. Other responding agencies were the sheriff’s office in Kingsbury County and the Arlington Fire Department.

Leak causes evacuation

BROOKINGS — A small leak involving natural gas led to the evacuation of employees and shoppers at Walmart, 2233 Sixth St., in Brookings on Saturday evening.

“The leak was exterior at a roof top heating unit,” Brookings Fire Chief Pete Bolzer said, adding that it was a routine call. “It was so small it took a while to locate. Once the loose fitting was found, it was repaired by Northwestern Energy.”

Bolzer noted that the hazard was minimal, but that Walmart’s policy is to evacuate its stores when such situations occur.
