BROOKINGS – Kyle Krogman threw eight innings and the Cubs scored seven consecutive runs in the middle innings during a 10-5 win over the Valley Springs Rats in a Sioux Empire League amateur baseball matchup Sunday night at Bob Shelden Field.

The right-hander gave up five runs – one earned – on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks.

The Rats’ Marcos Alvarez, who finished 3-for-5, singled and Caden Goetschius, who went 2-for-3, walked to open the fourth. Jared Mulder was hit by a pitch with one away. Ethan Horner hit a groundball up the middle, and a fielding error on the play allowed Alvarez and Goetschius to score to put Valley Springs ahead 2-0.

The Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the inning as Sam McMacken walked, moved to second on Tanner Swets’ two-out single and then scored on an error.

Todd Standish, who scored three times in the game, singled to open the sixth and McMacken was hit by a pitch. Jared Tschetter, who was 2-for-4, and Ty Schneider notched back-to-back RBI singles to put Brookings ahead 3-2. Austin Koenig singled with one away and Schneider scored on an error soon thereafter to push the margin to 4-2.

The Cubs put up three more runs in the seventh.

JaColby Anderson and Standish drew walks to chase Valley Springs starter Mitch Hoover. Tschetter’s one-out hit loaded the bases.

Schneider walked to force in Anderson – his second RBI of the night – and Swets was hit by a pitch, which allowed Standish to score. Tschetter scampered home on a wild pitch, extending the advantage to 7-2.

The Rats rallied in the eighth.

Goetschius doubled with one out. Jared Mulder then reached on an error, as Goetschius sprinted home. Horner walked, and a passed ball allowed the runners to move up 90 feet. Cody Franklin’s two-run double cut the deficit to 7-5.

Brookings countered with another three-spot in the bottom of the eighth.

Krogman doubled, Anderson singled and Standish was plunked to load the bases.

McMacken quickly unloaded them with a double to provide for the final margin.

Caleb Stratmoen worked the ninth to seal the deal, striking out one batter and walking another.

Hoover gave up six runs – four earned – on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts in six-plus innings in the loss.

The Rats beat the Cubs 10-2 in seven innings in the first meeting June 24 in Brandon.

Brookings (13-5, 3-3) is host to the Harrisburg Woodies on Thursday at 7 p.m.
