Janna Allen, 89, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away quietly while surrounded by family on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021, at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Hilltop United Methodist Church, Sioux Falls, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation starts at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at George Boom Funeral Home and On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls, where the family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Janna was born in Eldora, IA, on March 25, 1932, to Cornelius and Amke Juchems. Janna was raised on a farm and much of her time in her adolescent years was taken up doing chores. She graduated from Eldora High School and then received an Associate Nursing degree from Marshalltown Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.
Janna married Herbert Allen on June 1, 1956, in Steamboat Rock, IA. Herb and Jan started their family in Iowa, where Herb worked for the Iowa Extension Service. In 1963, the family moved to Brookings, SD, where Herb obtained his PhD and began teaching at South Dakota State University.
Jan suspended her nursing career for 11 years while raising their two sons, Raymond and Mark. She later re-established her nursing credentials and continued her nursing career working first for the Brookings Hospital and then for the Brookings Clinic until she was 75.
Both Herb and Jan were active church members at both the First United Methodist Church in Brookings and then at the Hilltop United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls. Jan was involved in many areas of the church but she was recently most active in the Bible study and sewing groups. Jan made many baby blankets and crocheted many prayer shawls.
Grateful for having shared her life are two sons, Raymond Allen and his wife, Kristin and Mark Allen and his wife, Christina; six grandchildren, Matt Allen, Neil Allen and his wife, Kenzie, Seth Allen and Sam Allen, Brian Welch and his fiancée, Krystal, Joe Welch and his wife, Rachel; a sister-in-law, Jay’s wife, Francis; and many other relatives and friends.
Janna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Herb; her parents, Cornelius and Amke Juchems; and all of her siblings, her brothers, Ben and his wife, Betty and Jay, and her sister, Florence Burns and her husband, Bill.
