BROOKINGS — The Brookings Osher Lifelong Learning Institute spring classes continued to provide a wide variety of subjects for its members seeking new and interesting knowledge. Learning together for the fun of it gets better with every class.

“Travel Hacks for the Savvy Traveler,” with Rich and Kathy Reid, gave the OLLI members a wealth of information on how to make your life easier while getting the most out of your travel adventures. They covered common-sense packing, efficient cabin use while cruising, laundry service in a foreign country, passports, TSA, touring, money exchanges, sanitary practices, travel apps and many more tips. The Reids shared an abundance of visual aids and anecdotes of their travels abroad along with future travels being planned for their next OLLI presentation.

OLLI members learned about different eye diseases and personal eye care as we age from Dr. Taylor Kneip, optometrist with the Brookings Health System’s Yorkshire Eye Clinic and Optical. The lecture covered an overview of the eye along with eye conditions, prevention and treatment for cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetes. Dr. Kneip’s PowerPoint presentation included actual photos of what an optometrist sees during eye exams which helped the members better understand diagnosis and treatments.

Officer Seth Bonnema and his K9 partner, Teddi, gave a presentation and demonstration about the Brookings Police Department’s K9 program. The OLLI members were impressed by the determination and focus of Teddi as she quickly tracked down the alleged contraband in the room. Bonnema described how he was matched with Teddi, their certification process with annual renewal and how they work together on drug detection and apprehension.
