ABERDEEN/SIOUX FALLS – The Ranger boys picked up a pair of 7-1 road victories during South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association action, beating Aberdeen on Sunday after toppling Sioux Falls (2) on Saturday.
Brookings (8-1-1-0) plays at Yankton on Friday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m.
Sunday
• Brookings 7, Aberdeen 1
Max Kjelden and Jamison Honkomp both lit the lamp twice to complete the 2-0 weekend.
The score was 2-1 after a period and 4-1 through two.
Wes Koenig, Ike Johnson and Breck Hirrschoff added goals.
Honkomp, Carter Merritt and Alec Rice were credited with assists.
Kade Brecher tallied the win in goal after stopping 13 shots.
The Cougars’ Matthew Feiock made 41 saves.
Saturday
• Brookings 7, Sioux Falls (2) 1
The Rangers went 5-for-6 on power plays in the dominating win.
Max Kjelden’s first-period goal knotted the score at 1-all.
Logan Bortnem scored twice during Brookings’ four-goal second period. Carter Merritt and Breck Hirrschoff also lit the lamp.
Kjelden netted his second goal in the final period and Alec Rice also scored.
Ike Johnson tallied three assists. Bortnem, Merritt, Hirrschoff and Talon Richter added assists.
Philip Kuechenmeister earned the win between the pipes.
Sioux Falls had 34 penalty minutes on nine infractions.
