BROOKINGS – The Rangers took two games from the Marlins over the weekend at Larson Ice Center to creep closer to Mitchell in the SDAHA standings.
Brookings sits in fifth with 14 points, courtesy of a 7-3 record while the Marlins are in fourth with 15 points (7-3-1-0).
The Rangers return to the ice on Saturday when they face Aberdeen – tops in the standings with 23 points and an 11-0-1-0 mark.
Sunday
• Brookings 5, Mitchell 2
The Marlins got on the scoreboard first on Maggie Dailey’s goal before McKenna Geraets sent the game into the first intermission tied at 1-1 with an unassisted tally.
Mitchell retook the lead midway through the second period on Kelsey Amick’s goal, but Jadyn Peterson lit the lamp off assists from Bethany Rennich and Addie Ramlo to make it 2-2 through two.
Emma Rice scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal on a power play with less than 7 minutes left as Montana Myer earned the assist. Jenna Schulte’s goal pushed the lead to 4-2 as Peterson picked up the assist, and then, Savannah Barber provided for the final margin with the assist going to Elli Hegdahl.
Both teams had 28 shots on goal as Jadyn Runge earned the win with 26 saves.
Saturday
• Brookings 4, Mitchell 2
Myer’s opening goal was set up by Hegdahl and she returned the favor later in the period by assisting Hegdahl’s goal to make it a 2-0 game.
The Marlins pulled even with back-to-back goals by Jenna Grosdidier and Ashley Jones in the second period. Kelsey Amick assisted on both.
Schulte netted the game-winner with 1:47 to play in the second as Peterson assisted.
Janaya Kuehl’s power-play tally with 3:43 remaining in the game provided for the final margin. Rennich was credited with the assist.
Runge made 27 saves and Mitchell’s Katelyn Uithoven stopped 31 shots.
