SIOUX FALLS – Summit League officials announced Wednesday plans to proceed with a 16-game league schedule for women’s soccer, beginning in February.
In August, the Summit League President’s Council voted unanimously to postpone the regular season and championships for fall sports to the spring due to COVID-19 concerns.
“We are excited to be able to provide these championship experiences for our student-athletes and lock in these dates,” Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple said.
The league’s nine women’s soccer members will play the same opponent twice at one site on the same weekend, with each squad receiving one bye weekend. All of South Dakota State’s matches are scheduled to follow a Friday/Sunday format, starting Feb. 12-14 at Omaha.
After a bye week and trip to Oral Roberts Feb. 26-28, the defending league tournament champion Jackrabbits are scheduled to open the home season by hosting newcomer Kansas City on March 5 and 7 at Fishback Soccer Park.
The series with Kansas City will mark the first of three consecutive home weekends for SDSU, including matchups with defending regular season champion Denver (March 12, 14) and South Dakota (March 19, 21). The Jackrabbits close out the home slate with a two-game series against North Dakota April 2 and 4.
Game times and ticket information will be announced at a later date.
Other road trips for the Jackrabbits are set for March 26-28 at North Dakota State and April 9-11 at Western Illinois.
The top four teams in the regular season standings will advance to the Summit League Women’s Soccer Championship, which will be played April 15-17 at Caniglia Field in Omaha, Neb.
Denver, the 2019 regular season champion, will retain the right to host the 2021 championship tournament.
