SIOUX FALLS — South Dakota State opened its own invitational with a win after sweeping Idaho State at the Jackrabbit Invitational at the Sanford Pentagon on Thursday night.

The Jacks — who won by scores of 25-19, 25-,19 and 25-18 — ran their record up to 9-0 and continued the best start for the program in the Division I era.

Idaho State jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first game but SDSU rallied to tie the set at 8-8. The Jacks held onto a 20-18 lead after a handling error by Camryn Honn, but Madison Burr registered two kills around a kill by Idaho State’s Jamie Streit and a bad set by Asiah Sopoaga gave SDSU a 23-19 lead.

Coming out of a Bengals timeout, Sylvie Zgonc setup game point with a kill and an attack error by Watts gave the Jackrabbits a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Tigers had another 4-1 start in the second game, but the Jacks rallied to tie the game at 13-13 on an ace by Rachel Wieber. The Jacks and Bengals alternated points until Katie Van Egdom’s kill gave SDSU a 17-16 lead and a kill by Sydni Schetnan forced an Idaho State timeout.

The stretch started a 9-3 run to close the game, which ended when an attack error by Streit gave SDSU a 25-19 win.

The Jacks had their best start of the night in the third game when a 6-1 run gave them a 10-5 lead on Honn’s ace. SDSU led 15-7 on Annalee Ventling-Brown’s kill and although the Tigers would close the lead to 19-16 on an attack error by Van Egdom, SDSU scored six of the final eight points and closed the match on a kill by Schetnan for a 25-18 victory.

SDSU’s offense was on point on Thursday night, posting a .267 hit percentage to Idaho State’s .169. The Jacks had four aces to Idaho State’s one and had a 72.4 percent side-out percentage to the Bengals’ 54.8 percent.
