Stop the CO2 pipeline

Posted

I want to thank The Brookings Register for the article in the paper on Sept. 4, regarding the CO2 pipeline.

This is a huge issued for Brookings County. The CO2 pipeline will be leaving the ethanol plant in Aurora going through Brookings County to Lake County.

There are many concerns about the dangers of this pipeline.

Pipelines leak for numerous reasons. We don’t know enough about them. If this pipeline leaks, we have no idea how that would affect the towns of Aurora and Brookings.

There are variables to consider if the pipeline leaks. How big is the release, what is the outside temperature (if it is colder the gas will go farther), how much wind is blowing that day (we know how much the wind blows in South Dakota).

Depending on where you live in Brookings County, you may be affected more than others. These are important issues to think about for residents living in Aurora and Brookings.

Satartia, Mississippi, had a ruptured CO2 pipeline. It leaked the odorless gas into the town. In Sartartia, children passed out and others experienced seizures. Emergency personal evacuated about 200 residents. Forty-five people sought medical attention.

Please protect the people in Brookings County and vote "no" in November on RL 21.

There will be an informational meeting on both sides of the issue on Sept 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Old Sanctuary, 928th Fourth St., in Brookings.

Hope to see you all there.
