BROOKINGS — A “My Ascension” film and panel community event is being held at Brookings High School:
The summer before her senior year of high school, Emma Benoit made a suicide attempt. Since then, Benoit has made it her mission to share her story to inspire others to keep going.
On April 15 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Bell Auditorium in the high school, the school's counseling department will host a viewing of the documentary “My Ascension,” brought to the district with collaboration of the Helpline Center.
“My Ascension” is a 50-minute documentary that chronicles Benoit's inspiring journey and quest to walk again after her suicide attempt. Throughout her recovery, she also works to bring Hope Squad, a school-based suicide prevention program, to Louisiana. Additionally, the film highlights the stories of two remarkable young people who tragically did not survive their attempts, and we learn first-hand from their families, friends, school officials and suicide prevention experts about the devastating effects of suicide and what can be done to prevent it.
Following the documentary viewing, attendees will observe a panel discussion consisting of mental health professionals and community members. Resources will be available for families.
Recommended for a viewing audience of seventh grade and up is suggested. If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, help is available. Call or text 988 anytime 24/7 to connect with mental health resources.
