Bobcats split DH with Yankton

BROOKINGS – The Bobcats split an Eastern South Dakota Conference doubleheader with Yankton on Thursday at South Side Field.

The Gazelles rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the opener, 10-9, before Brookings put up 11 runs in the first inning en route to a 16-14 win in 4 1/2-innings in the nightcap.

The Bobcats travel to Sioux Falls on Monday to face Washington.

• Yankton 10, Brookings 9

The ‘Cats scored three first-inning runs; added a single tally in the third; tacked on four in the fifth; and then notched another in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough as Yankton scored eight runs over the last two innings to earn the win.

Peyton Evans had four hits and drove in four runs to lead the offense as Britta Kratz chipped in with three hits and four RBIs. Ally Zerfas added three hits while Riley Weisbeck and Brooklyn Roberts contributed two hits apiece.

Jessa Rindels suffered the loss in the circle.

• Brookings 16, Yankton 14

After Yankton scored two in the top of the first, the Bobcats sent 15 batters to the dish and plated 11 runs in the bottom to take early control of the second game.

But the Gazelles tacked on five more runs in the second to get within 11-7.

Brookings went up 14-7 with three in the bottom of the second before Yankton answered with three of its own in the fourth to make it 14-10.

The Bobcats scored a pair of runs in the fourth and held on for the win by limiting the Gazelles to four runs in the top of the fifth.

Evans and Zerfas again led the ‘Cats’ offense with three hits apiece while Kratz had two.

Sydney Grendler, Delaney La Framboise, Rindels, Jadyn Runge and Roberts all added a hit.
