Bombers go 1-3 over weekend

SIOUX FALLS – The Brookings Bombers Black team went 1-3 in the Mid-Summer Classic in Sioux Falls over the weekend. They defeated Minnetonka, Minnesota, in the first game and then fell to St. Peter, Minnesota, Sioux Falls East and East Ridge (Minnesota).

Bombers go 1-3 over weekend

SIOUX FALLS – The Brookings Bombers Black team went 1-3 in the Mid-Summer Classic in Sioux Falls over the weekend. They defeated Minnetonka, Minnesota, in the first game and then fell to St. Peter, Minnesota, Sioux Falls East and East Ridge (Minnesota).

Friday

 Brookings 8, Minnetonka 0 (5 inn.)

Austin Clark and Griffen Bartels combined to pitch five shutout innings as the Bombers defeated Minnetonka in their first game of the tournament.

Brookings scored one run in the top of the first inning when Breck Hirrschoff scored on a passed ball. The Bombers then struck for five runs in the top of the third inning. Austin Clark hit an RBI single and Austin Ronning hit an RBI single. Jacob Kahle and Hirrschoff then each hit RBI singles to make it 6-0.

The Bombers added one run each in the fourth and fifth inning. Clark scored on a passed ball and Owen Schneider hit an RBI single to make it 8-0 and the game ended.

Hirrschoff and Clark each went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Schneider went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Ronning went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Clark pitched the first three innings and gave up a hit, struck out three batters and walked one. Bartels pitched the final two innings and gave up a hit, struck out two batters and walked none.

The Bombers offense stalled out in the second game of the tournament as they were blown out.

Each team scored one run in the first inning. Nolan Miles singled to lead off the bottom of the first and later scored on a Jack Merritt ground out.

St. Peter then scored six runs in the next four innings. They put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth when they scored six more runs. Brookings was unable to score in the bottom of the sixth and the game ended via the 10-run rule.

Merritt went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Ronning, Miles and Schneider each went 1-for-3. Miles picked up the loss for Brookings. He pitched the first three innings and gave up five runs, three earned on six hits. He struck out one batter and walked one.

Saturday

 Sioux Falls East 10, Brookings 2 (5 inn.)

Sioux Falls East jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first three innings and didn’t look back as the Bombers fell in the third game of the inning.

Brookings was able to cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning. Hirrschoff scored on a Clark sacrifice fly and Schneider scored on an error. Sioux Falls East struck for six runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-2. The Bombers went scoreless in the top of the fifth and Sioux Falls East added one more run in the bottom of the inning.

Ronning, Miles and Hirrschoff each went 1-for-2. Hirrschoff was handed the loss for Brookings after pitching the first four innings. He gave up nine runs, five earned on six hits. He struck out one batter and walked three.

Sunday

 East Ridge 7, Brookings 4

The Bombers led 4-0, but their offense struggled in the final four innings as they fell in the final game of the tournament.

Brookings scored two runs in the top of the first inning. With one out, Hirrschoff and Schneider each singled. Clark then reached on an error to load the bases up. Merritt then singled and Hirrschoff and Schneider each scored.

The Bombers held East Ridge scoreless in the both the first and the second inning. They then scored two runs in the top of the third. Schneider hit a two-run double to make it 4-0. East Ridge then scored one run in the bottom of the third inning.

East Ridge took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth when they scored six runs. Brookings was unable to score in the final two innings.

Schneider and Merritt each went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s. Merritt picked up the loss for the Bombers after pitching one inning. He gave up five runs, four unearned on five hits. He struck out no batters and walked two.

Up next, the Bombers will play a doubleheader against Aberdeen in Brookings on Tuesday.
