BROOKINGS - The Bombers Maroon swept Sioux Falls East 13U Black in a youth baseball doubleheader Friday evening at Mickelson Field, cruising to a 16-2 win in the opener before rallying for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

Bombers Maroon sweep S.F. East

BROOKINGS – The Bombers Maroon swept Sioux Falls East 13U Black in a youth baseball doubleheader Friday evening at Mickelson Field, cruising to a 16-2 win in the opener before rallying for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

Brookings (28-10) plays a doubleheader at Watertown on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Game 1

• Brookings 16, Sioux Falls East 2 (4 inn.)

The Bombers Maroon got off to a fast start with nine runs in the opening inning and never looked back.

Brookings totaled 13 hits.

Cole McKeown went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Talon Richter finished 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and three runs.

Sam Hardin and Trey Svennes both doubled twice, drove in a run and scored two runs.

Caden Krogman contributed two hits and an RBI. Zachary Moe doubled and drove in a run.

Payton Theodosopoulos and Ashton Witte had the team’s other RBIs. Jake Ammann singled.

The Bombers Maroon stole 13 bases, including three apiece by McKeown and Richter and two by Svennes.

Svennes pitched all four innings to earn the win, giving up two runs – none earned – on six hits and two walks. He struck out three batters.

Game 2

• Brookings 5, Sioux Falls East 4 (6 inn.)

Theodosopoulos’ walkoff single capped the Bombers Maroon’s four-run sixth inning as Brookings completed the sweep.

Kadan Jewett, who finished 2-for-3, pulled Brookings even at 1-1 with an RBI single in the fourth; however, Sioux Falls East scored one run in the fifth and two in the top of the sixth to move ahead 4-1.

Brock Longville reached on a dropped third strike to get the bottom of the sixth going. Sam Hardin followed with a double.

Later, Joshua Devine drove in Longville with groundout – the second out of the frame – to cut the deficit to 4-2. Sam Hardin then scored on an error.

Lincoln Hardin, who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and Jewett followed with back-to-back singles. Jack Even, who was 2-for-3, had an RBI single to pull the Bombers Maroon even at 4-all and set the stage for Theodosopoulos.

He lifted a single to center to drive in Witte for the winning run.

Logan Bortnem finished 2-for-3. Sam Hardin and Devine had the other hits.

Krogman pitched the sixth to earn the win.

Bortnem gave up two runs on five hits and two walks with a strikeout over the first five innings.
