Junior Achievement speakers coming to Mickelson Middle School in Brookings

BROOKINGS — On Dec. 6, local business leaders will be at Mickelson Middle School to discuss ethics with students.

Junior Achievement of South Dakota is partnering with over 365 community leaders from 250 businesses across the state to inspire students to learn the importance of ethics and challenge students to consider how ethical dilemmas are a part of everyday life.

The JA presentation was also held Monday at Sioux Valley Middle School in Volga.

Through the JA Excellence through Ethics program, over 10,000 South Dakota middle and high school students from 28 communities will learn from local community leaders about the importance of making ethical decisions.

JA Ethics volunteers will provide each student an opportunity to think critically about ethical dilemmas they may face at school, at home, or at work. JA Ethics volunteers will also share their professional dilemmas to highlight tough decisions they have had to make and how those decisions impacted them and others around them.

Through these discussions, students will learn how ethical and unethical choices affect everyone in a community.

Kayla Eitreim, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of South Dakota, stated, “As we enter our 16th year of offering JA Excellence through Ethics, we look forward to the robust conversations that happen during this experience. Over the years, we have seen the impact of having leaders in the classroom to visit about ethical decision-making and share their personal and professional stories.

“But we also value the opportunity to have our community leaders hear directly from young people, to understand the kinds of decisions they are making and their thought process while making those decisions. We sincerely appreciate the partnership we have with the participating school districts and community volunteers to help prepare students to become tomorrow’s leaders.”

Held on Monday before the legislative session opens, the conference provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity to network with business owners from around the state and converse with lawmakers, constitutional officers, and other influential state officials.

During the evening social, the retailers association will present its annual Retailer of the Year, Restaurant of the Year, and Community Service award winners.

“We believe that supporting South Dakota businesses provides opportunities for the next generation,” said Executive Director Nathan Sanderson. “We invite all entrepreneurs and business professionals to come see how sharing these values continues to advance our state.”
