'Cats finish 8th at ESD Tournament

BRANDON – Mitchell piled up 382 team points to win the Eastern South Dakota Conference Boys’ Tennis Tournament on Friday.

Brandon Valley (215) was second, Aberdeen Central (145) third, Pierre (144) fourth, Watertown (125) fifth, Yankton (108) sixth, Huron (59) seventh, Brookings (45) eighth and Harrisburg (16) ninth.

Dalton Rittershaus (No. 2) finished third for the Bobcats.

Rittershaus opened with a 10-3 defeat of Brandon Valley’s Carson Mork. After falling 10-3 to Mitchell’s Carter Cavanaugh in the semifinals, he beat Yankton’s Sam Mooney 8-4 in the third-place matchup.

Jonah Dobbs (No. 1) and Alex Miley (No. 5) placed fifth.

Dobbs fell 10-2 to Mitchell’s Jacob Dahme, but bounced back by beating Harrisburg’s Jakson Stoutamire 8-4 in the consolation semifinals and Brandon Valley’s Matthew Schmitz 9-8 (6) in the fifth-place match.

Miley won a play-in match 10-4 over Harrisburg’s Karter Lein. He dropped a 10-7 decision to Brandon Valley’s Jack Talcott, before beating Huron’s Brenden Schlader 8-2 in the consolation semis and Central’s Luke Reierson 8-6 in the fifth-place match.

Micah Ardry (No. 3) and Zach Weber (No. 4) both finished 1-2.

Ardry picked up a 10-8 victory over Harrisburg’s Jacob Hanssen in a play-in match. He fell 10-0 to Mitchell’s Jared Suelflow in the first round and 8-3 to Watertown’s Tate Skoglund in the consolation.

Weber won 10-5 versus Aberdeen Central’s Andrew Hartze in the play-in match, before falling 10-0 to Mitchell’s Adam Loes and 8-0 to Pierre’s Chris Rae.

Dawson Peters (No. 6) went 0-2, falling 10-2 to Aberdeen Central’s Tyson Miller in the first round and 8-1 to Brandon Valley’s Jacob Frantzen in a consolation semifinal.

The Bobcats posted a combined 1-5 record in doubles as Rittershaus and Dobbs went 0-2 at No. 1; Ardry and Weber went 1-2 with a play-in win at No. 2; and Peters and Miley finished 0-1 with a play-in loss at No. 3.
