Cossacks cruise to 12th win

VOLGA – Trevor Hanson and Trevor Olson scored 20 points apiece in limited floor time as Sioux Valley handled Chester Area 77-33 during Big East Conference boys’ basketball action Tuesday night.

Hanson went 10-of-15 from the field and added 11 rebounds to complete the double-double. He blocked five shots.

“I thought we came out and got some things going but we felt maybe flatter than we’d been the last few games,” said Cossack coach Bill Vincent. “Maybe our minds were already on Saturday in the Corn Palace. We pride ourselves on ‘be here before there,’ but I think our minds wandered a little bit that way and we didn’t always keep our intensity level up where we had been the couple weeks heading into this game.”

Sioux Valley was ahead 25-14 after a quarter and 44-24 at halftime. Chester hit five 3-pointers in the opening half.

The Cossacks slammed the door shut in the third, outscoring the Flyers 18-2 to move ahead 62-26.

Ryan Schuster finished with 10 points. Jake Schneider totaled six points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Max Nielson contributed five points, five dimes and four boards.

Tyler Schwartz paced the reserves with five markers and four rebounds as 10 Cossacks found the scoring column.

For Chester (6-7, 4-3), Alex Tammen ended up with 13 points.

Sioux Valley won for the 11th time in a row to improve to 12-1 (6-0).

“We’re seeing a lot of good things,” Vincent said when asked about his team’s progress. “I think we’re seeing a good mix between our inside game and our outside game. Defensively, we feel like we’re improved. I thought today we were maybe a little bit slow to some of those defensive spots.”

The Cossacks haven’t been tested much outside of a 73-58 home loss to Clark/Willow Lake on Dec. 9. Eleven of Sioux Valley’s 12 wins have been by more than 20 points as it is outscoring its opponents an average of 79.1-45.8 overall – a margin of 33.2 points per game.

The Cossacks’ closest win was a 60-53 defeat of Dell Rapids in the Entringer Classic on Dec. 30 in Brookings.

However, Sioux Valley has a few tests moving forward, beginning with a matchup against Bridgewater-Emery (9-2) on Saturday during the Hanson Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Following games against De Smet (3-6) and Flandreau (6-3; a team Sioux Valley beat 82-55 in the BEC Tournament final Jan. 6 in Parker), the Cossacks square off with Sioux Falls Christian (8-0) on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 6:30 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

Sioux Valley wraps up the regular season with games against Deuel (5-4), Castlewood (7-2) and Garretson (1-9).

“It’s important for any team, especially for ours,” Vincent said when asked about facing a quality Huskies team this weekend. “And that’s why we go to the classics like the Corn Palace, the Pentagon and the Entringer; they give us those big matchups that we get excited for and get up for and they prepare you for postseason play. So, obviously, they’re important.”
