VOLGA – The Cossacks played right with Beresford in a Saturday afternoon Big East Conference matchup but came up short in a 3-0 loss.
The Watchdogs won by set scores of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-20 to improve to 13-7 overall and 3-2 in the BEC.
Leading by two at 6-4, Beresford went on an eight-point run for a 14-4 edge to take control of the first set and the Cossacks never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Sioux Valley scored the first six points of the second set before the Watchdogs rallied to even the score at 9-9 on a kill by Jessica Niles.
The Cossacks regained the momentum courtesy of a Taylor Moir ace and a kill by Rylan Willis and rebuilt their lead to four points two different times – 18-14 and 20-16.
Beresford scored seven straight points to go up 23-20 before Miakken Vincent had a kill to get Sioux Valley within 23-21.
But a ball-handling error, followed by an attack error, gave the Watchdogs two points and the second set.
In the third set, the Cossacks led by as many as three points on three different occasions before Beresford tied the score at 11-11.
Tied at 14-14, a Sioux Valley attack error started a 5-0 Watchdog run.
A kill by Willis pulled the Cossacks within two points at 20-18, but Beresford closed out the set – and the match – with a 5-2 run as Jaycee Fischer’s kill completed the sweep.
Vincent tallied 16 kills, a solo block and a block assist to lead Sioux Valley at the net. Willis added five kills and Pierri Liedtke chipped in with four. Haydyn Hauge had 13 set assists; Vincent finished with six; and Bekah Bahn led the Cossack defense with 20 digs.
Sioux Valley, 7-18 on the season and 0-4 in the BEC, plays host to West Central tonight.
