SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Valley girls’ basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday after falling to Vermillion 60-25 at the Sanford Pentagon.
The Tanagers jumped out to a big lead early as they outscored the Cossacks 20-3 in the first quarter. They continued to roll in the second quarter and led 35-9 at halftime. Sioux Valley hung around in the third quarter only getting outscored 12-10, but it was too little too late.
Sioux Valley shot 20% from the field for the game and the Cossacks were 2-for-15 from three. The Tanagers shot 40.7% from the field and were 5-for-12 from three.
Rebounding and turnovers really hurt the Cossacks. Vermillion won the rebounding battle 41-24 and the Tanagers forced 17 turnovers. Sioux Valley was 7-for-28 from the free throw line while Vermillion was 7-for-10.
Reagan Johnson led Sioux Valley with nine points and six rebounds. Ashley Bjerke had five points and Isabelle Bloker had four.
Vermillion was led by Brooke Jensen who had 16 points and four rebounds. Kasey Hanson had nine points and four rebounds. Lauren Mockler had seven points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
Sioux Valley is now 5-1 on the season and will take on Hamlin in Volga Jan. 12.
