Cossacks top Lady Bulldogs

VOLGA – Sioux Valley improved to 3-0 in the Lake Central Conference play Tuesday night as they defeated De Smet in four sets.

The Cossacks won the first set 25-15, but fell down early in the second set and were unable to bounce back falling 25-13.

“In the first set I thought we were ready to play and came out with confidence. In the second set I thought we started second guessing ourselves again and not making good decisions and kind of fell apart,” said Sioux Valley head coach Jill Vincent

The third set looked like the first set as Sioux Valley won 25-11 and the Cossacks finished the Bulldogs with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set.

The Cossacks used big runs to fuel them to victory in each of the sets they won. Vincent said that is something her team needs to continue doing.

“Usually it’s the other teams making the runs on us,” Vincent said. “We talk about going on runs a lot, so to be able to put some points together and making some positive things happen was nice to see.”

Sioux Valley had 45 total kills on the night. Miakken Vincent led the team with 15. Rylan Willis had 13 and Perri Liedfke had seven.

“We shared a lot of the kills. We saw a lot of people with kills. Miakken had quite a few and so did Rylan. It was nice to see us have a great front row. They also each had a double-double. They’ve each been working hard and have settled in to being the leaders on this team,” Vincent said.

Willis had a team-high 18 digs. Vincent and Rachel Cotton each had 10 digs a piece. Hayden Hauge led Sioux Valley with 38 assists and Reagan Johnson had both of the Cossacks two blocks.

One of the things the Cossacks struggled with was serving. They had multiple service errors. Vincent said her team needs to improve on serving moving forward.

“We lose our focus really easily, so we’ll continue to work on that. The longer the match goes, the worse our focus gets I guess. It’s getting better and better each match. We have better focus for longer periods of time. We’ll continue to work on it all year,” Vincent said.

Kennadi Bucholz led De Smet with 10 kills. Autumn Wilkinson and Reyna each had four kills. Emma Albrecht had a team-high 12 assists and Bucholz had three aces.

Sioux Valley will travel to Castlewood Thursday with the match starting at 7:30 p.m. De Smet will play at Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Thursday.

“We have a long week of volleyball here up until next Tuesday, so hopefully we don’t have any more breakdowns,” Vincent said.
