Cubs go 1-1 versus Minnesota clubs

AURORA – The Cubs split with a pair of Minnesota squads Sunday afternoon at Langland Field, falling 8-7 to the Milroy Yankees and then defeating Dawson 16-4 in six innings.

Brookings (2-1) plays at Clear Lake on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

 Milroy Yankees 8, Brookings 7

The Yankees took advantage of 15 free passes – including 12 walks – and six errors to post the victory.

Milroy scored twice in the top of the seventh.

Brian Dolan, Isaac Schmidt and Eric Dolan walked with one out to load the bases.

Jackson Hughes hit into a fielder’s choice to drive in the tying run and Dylan Criquet-Danielson followed with an RBI single to make it 8-7.

Schmidt gave up two runs on a pair of hits with four strikeouts and a trio of walks over the final 4 1/3 innings to post the win on the mound. He sat down the Cubs in order in the bottom of the seventh, sandwiching strikeouts around a popout.

The Yankees finished with just three hits. Derek Rasmussen, Cody Greve and Brian Dolan tallied RBIs.

Milroy scored twice in the opening frame. Brookings was up 5-2 after four, before the Yankees put up back-to-back-to-back two-run innings.

Ty Schneider’s two-run homer in the sixth put the Cubs ahead 7-6.

Jeff Fish, Todd Standish and Jared Tschetter doubled. Tyler Kreutner, Jacob Schoon and Austin Koenig singled. Standish, Fish, Tschetter and Schoon had RBIs.

Kreutner, the fourth of five Cubs pitchers, took the loss after surrendering two runs and three walks in a third of an inning.

Starter Joey Texley allowed two runs – one earned – with five walks and three strikeouts in four innings.

The Cubs racked up 10 runs in the opening inning in the defeat of the Drakes.

Brookings used four hits and seven free passes, including five walks, in the big frame.

Schneider, Sam McMacken (double) and Jake Anderson each had a pair of RBIs in the inning, while Standish, Tschetter and Koenig added one apiece.

Fish hit a solo homer in the fifth and a three-run walkoff in the sixth. Shepardson went deep in the fourth.

Anderson ended up 3-for-4 with four runs. Shepardson was 2-for-2 with two runs.

Shepardson earned the pitching win in relief, allowing one run – unearned – on two hits with three walks and a strikeout in 1 2/3 innings.

Starter Jake Devine gave up three runs on one hit with six strikeouts and four walks in three innings. Noel Burgos recorded the final four outs.

Dawson’s Braden Thompson surrendered 12 runs on eight hits and seven walks with a trio of Ks in four innings.
