Four Jackrabbits honored on All-Summit team

TULSA, Okla. – Chris Halbur was named to the All-Summit League First Team and three other South Dakota State baseball players were honored on the second team as postseason awards were announced Tuesday on the eve of the Summit League Baseball Championship.

Selections were determined by a vote of the league's six head coaches.

A senior right-hander from Manning, Iowa, Halbur received first-team honors as a relief pitcher. He enters postseason play tied for the league lead with nine saves and has compiled a 3-0 record with a 0.65 earned run average.

Leading the second-team honorees is repeat selection Matt Johnson at first base.

A senior from Ankeny, Iowa, Johnson ranks among the top 10 overall in nearly every major offensive category, including a league-best .591 slugging percentage. Johnson ended the regular season by leading the team with 11 home runs, 39 RBIs and a .421 on-base percentage. He also shares the team lead with 35 runs scored and 62 hits, while ranking second on the team with 15 doubles and a .333 batting average.

Across the diamond, third baseman Newt Johnson earned second-team recognition during a junior season in which he has batted .317 with a team-high 16 doubles. The Rapid City native ranks second on the squad with 38 RBIs – 30 of which were recorded in Summit League contests.

Rounding out the Jackrabbit contingent was sophomore Nick Smith, who earned second-team honors as a utility player. A sophomore from Chanhassen, Minn., Smith started 27 league games, splitting time between second base, left field and designated hitter. He leads the team with a .339 batting average and shares the team lead with 62 hits en route to registering 20 multi-hit games. Smith also ranks second on the squad with seven stolen bases.

Regular-season champion Oral Roberts led the way with 13 all-Summit League selections, including 10 first-team honorees. The Golden Eagles also swept the top awards as outfielder Noah Cummings was named Summit League Player of the Year, left-hander Miguel Ausua was honored as Summit League Pitcher of the Year and shortstop Dylan Snypes was tabbed Summit League Newcomer of the Year. ORU's Ryan Folmar received Summit League Coach of the Year recognition.

SDSU (25-22), which has won eight games in a row, is seeded third in the Summit League Baseball Championship and will face third-seeded North Dakota State (29-23) in opening-round action at noon today. Top-seeded Oral Roberts (39-14) and No. 4 Western Illinois (18-30) are slated to meet at 6 p.m.

The double-elimination tournament is scheduled to wrap up Saturday at J.L. Johnson Stadium on the Oral Roberts University campus.
