BROOKINGS – Minnesota high school standout Gus Steiger recently signed a National Letter of Intent, indicating he will enroll at South Dakota State in the fall and compete for the Jackrabbit baseball program
"Gus is a really athletic guy who can help us both offensively and defensively," SDSU head coach Rob Bishop said. "He is a welcomed addition to this recruiting class with his overall ability and intangibles. He is an elite student who fits perfectly with what we are trying to accomplish on and off the field."
Steiger was a two-year starter as an infielder for Minnetonka High School and served as a team captain as a senior. During the recently completed 2017 high school season, he batted .408 with 10 stolen bases en route to being named to the Minnesota West Metro All-Star Team and earning a roster spot for the Minnesota High School Baseball All-Star Series.
He also was an honorable mention all-conference selection in football.
An academic all-state honoree, Steiger plans to major in engineering.
Steiger joins a 2017 recruiting class that includes six student-athletes who previously signed NLIs. Previous signees included pitchers Brady Moxham (Oakville, Manitoba/Midland College (Texas), Mitchell Oehme (Minnetonka, Minn.), Otis Roby (Knoxville, Iowa/Southeastern CC) and Austin Suhr (Bettendorf, Iowa/Iowa Central CC), as well as a pair of in-state recruits - catcher Timmy Paris (Rapid City) and outfielder Chase Kortan (Tabor).
