RAPID CITY – Harrisburg successfully defended its title by beating hometown Stevens 25-17, 21-25, 25-23, 25-15 in the championship match of the Class AA State Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

Harrisburg tops R.C. Stevens in four sets to repeat as Class AA champion

RAPID CITY – Harrisburg successfully defended its title by beating hometown Stevens 25-17, 21-25, 25-23, 25-15 in the championship match of the Class AA State Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

The Tigers’ Madison Wassink led the charge with 23 kills, four service aces and 1 1/2 blocks (one solo).

Carlie Fikse added eight kills and three blocks (one solo). Ashlee Cain had nine kills and 1 1/2 blocks (one solo). Meghan Krull contributed seven kills, two blocks and an ace.

Avery Thorson guided the offense with 41 set assists and Rachel Nelson paced the defense with 13 set assists.

The Raiders’ Kyah Watson tallied 15 kills and a block. Phebie Rossi chipped in with 10 kills, 2 1/2 blocks and an ace. Elizabeth Schaefer had 10 kills, a block and 16 digs.

Marlee Schneider dished out 39 set assists and Laura Petik notched 17 digs.

Top-seeded Harrisburg finished the season with a 23-1 mark, its lone loss coming to Sioux Falls Washington.

Harrisburg improved to 3-1 in title matches, including a 2-0 mark at the Class AA level. The Tigers have been to seven state tourneys. They won an A title in 2005 and were runners-up in 2008.

No. 3 Stevens went 30-7 this year. Stevens dropped to 3-5 in finals. The Raiders were making their 32nd state tourney appearance, including 19th consecutively.

Third place

 Sioux Falls Washington 3, Watertown 2

The seventh-seeded Warriors (22-14) toppled the fifth-seeded Arrows (15-9) 25-18, 21-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-6.

Sydni Schetnan had 16 kills and a block assist. Samiya Jami added six kills and five blocks (four solo). Lily Bartling tallied seven kills and a solo block as she (33) and Peyton Rymerson (37) combined for 70 digs.

Watertown got 15 kills and 1 1/2 blocks from McKenzie Buisker and 11 kills and two blocks (one solo) by Abby Johnson. Taylor Corey came up with 28 digs.

Fifth place

 Huron 3, Aberdeen Central 0

The Tigers (16-11) swept the Golden Eagles (17-7) 26-24, 25-18, 25-17.

Hollee Niehus racked up 23 1/2 points – 21 kills, 1 1/2 blocks (one solo) and an ace – to go with 10 digs. Jayda Schillingstad had 27 set assists and Havyn Heinz led five players in double figures with 31 digs.

Brooklyn Kusler totaled 10 kills and a block assist in the loss.

Seventh place

 Mitchell 3, Sioux Falls O’Gorman 0

The second-seeded Kernels topped the eighth-seeded Lady Knights (17-18) by the set scores of 27-25, 25-19 and 25-15.

Mackenzie Miller had 16 kills, two solo blocks an ace and 12 digs. Carly Haring added 11 kills and four blocks (three solo). Mandy Schmidt dished out 33 set assists and Chelsea Brewster came up with 15 digs. OG’s Emma Ronsiek had 13 kills and a solo block.
