High school volleyball: Garretson comes back to defeat Sioux Valley in five sets

Posted

VOLGA — Garretson came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Sioux Valley in five sets on Monday night at the Cossack Center.

In the fifth set the Cossacks and Blue Dragons were tied 4-4 and Garretson went on a 10-1 run to seize control and win the match. Sioux Valley head coach Jill Vincent said her team struggled to hit the ball in the fifth set.

“I think [Garretson] had a lot of confidence in their hitters. We stopped hitting the ball, so they had some easy passes and were able to set their hitters up easily,” Vincent said.

The fifth set was forced after Garretson staved off a fierce rally from the Cossacks in the fourth set. Sioux Valley trailed 18-12 and scored six straight points to tie the set up. It was then 22-22 when Garretson called timeout and the Blue Dragons responded with three straight points to win the set 25-22.

Vincent said the Cossacks need to do a better job of finding the right players later in the match.

“We kind of lose our focus [at times]. I thought today our focus was better, but we still get a step behind and were not really sure who should take the ball at times. We just need to find the people that are going to go get that ball and communicate. But I think for the most part, we’re doing a lot better,” Vincent said.

Things were going good for the Cossacks in the first two sets. They led 9-8 in the first set and then went on a 6-1 run to go up six points. Sioux Valley then led 18-11 and was able to take set one 25-21.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair throughout as the largest lead was two by both teams. The set was tied 23-23 and the Cossacks were able to score back-to-back points and take a 2-0 lead.

Vincent said the first two sets the Cossacks played with confidence and then were timid in the final three sets.

“It helps that our whole team is back. We haven’t really been ourselves all season, so we’re kind of getting used to it. But we were playing with a lot of confidence and a lot of juice [in the first two sets] and then we kind of got timid. We stopped hitting the ball, but it’ll be better,” Vincent said.

Garretson dominated the back half of the third set to get its first set win of the night. The Blue Dragons led 12-11 and then went on an 8-1 run to go up 20-12. They would finish the set with a 25-15 victory and it would be the first of three straight set wins and won the match.

Sioux Valley had 49 kills and 85 digs. Garretson had 61 kills and 90 digs. The Cossacks had 48 assists and seven blocks. The Blue Dragons had 59 assists and 13 blocks.

Kaedyn Sapp made a return from injury and had a big night for the Cossacks. She had 18 kills and 14 digs to lead Sioux Valley. Vincent said having both her and a couple other players back in the lineup helped lead to a successful night on offense.

“It definitely [helps having Sapp back] and then I have my primary passers back in the back row at all times. It’s just good to have her back in all aspects of the game,” Vincent said.

Adison Renkly had 11 kills and Allie Hofer had nine kills. Machaela Gerasch had 30 assists and 11 digs. Talya Vincent had 20 digs and Sunny Hesby had 15 assists and nine digs. Emma Gorvin had five kills and Jada Knutson had three kills.

The Blue Dragons had four players with double digit kills. Kaylin Koch had 16 kills and 19 digs. Aleah Wagner had 16 kills and 18 digs. Addison Hove had 19 kills and 24 assists. Sysa Bella had 16 kills and Sydney Olson had 33 assists and 19 digs.

This was the seventh straight loss for the Cossacks as they dropped to 14-14 on the season. They will finish the regular season on Tuesday at Elkton-Lake Benton. First set is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
