Hill City girls, West Central boys triumph in Class A

RAPID CITY – Hill City won the team title at the Class A State Girls’ Cross Country Meet for the first time and Beresford’s Cait Savey was medalist on Saturday afternoon at Hart Ranch.

The Rangers, the Class B runners-up in 1977, totaled 33 team points to better Black Hills Conference rivals Custer (64) and St. Thomas More (67), who were second and third, respectively.

Sioux Falls Christian (106) took fourth, Winner Area (109) fifth and Beresford (115) sixth.

Flandreau finished seventh with 117 points.

Savey, a senior, completed the 5K trek in 18 minutes, 35.75 seconds. She was fifth in 2016.

Hill City’s Karlee Simmons placed second with an 18:45.68 clocking.

Vermillion’s Maddie Lavin (19:18.24) finished third, Winner Area’s Sidda Schuyler (19:32.96) fourth and Lennox’s Ali Bainbridge (19:33.15) fifth.

Junior Sinona Flute paced the Fliers with a time of 19:49.35, putting her in eighth.

Madeline Hursey was 28th in 20:50.84 and Elizabeth Hursey ended up 37th in 21:02.28. Kathryn Parsley (22:22.02) took 82nd to round out the team score.

Also for Flandreau, Hannah Parsley (22:25.62) was 83rd and Reese Olinger (22:33.5) 90th.

Boys

RAPID CITY – West Central senior Derick Peters successfully defended his title while leading the Trojans to the team championship at the Class A State Boys’ Cross Country Meet on Saturday afternoon at Hart Ranch.

Peters finished the 5K in 15 minutes, 6.2 seconds. Additionally, he was runner-up in 2015.

West Central had 34 team points. Custer (54) was second and Sioux Falls Christian (61) third).

The Trojans won team titles in 2014 and 2015, before taking second to the Chargers last year.

Sioux Valley ended up 12th at 213.

Beresford’s Alec Atwood placed second in a time of 15:58.74. West Central’s Braden Peters finished third with a 15:59.41 clocking.

St. Thomas More’s Ty Trainor (16:05.14), who was second last year, and Custer’s Joe Rush (16:11.77) rounded out the top five.

Max Nielson paced the Cossacks, taking 29th in 17:37.65.

Kelton Vincent (18:32.04) finished 70th, Christian Rosas Landin (18:59.62) 91st and Cade Gross (19:20.16) 100th to complete Sioux Valley’s team tally. Also for the Cossacks, Evan Rathbum (19:44.08) was 108th and Dylen Milton (19:58.13) 114th.

Flandreau’s Austin Kulm was 95th in 19:11.79 and David Allen (19:41.93) took 107th.
