BROOKINGS – Six Jackrabbits, led by Madison Guebert’s 21 points, scored nine or more points as South Dakota State upended No. 21 Drake, 80-71, in nonconference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena.

Guebert knocked down two of her five 3-pointers in the first quarter to help the Jackrabbits to a 24-15 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Guebert midway through the second gave SDSU its biggest lead of the contest at 14 points, 40-26, before the Bulldogs closed with a 9-5 run to make it 45-35 at halftime.

Drake pulled within five points, 49-44, three minutes into the third quarter before Sydney Palmer got hot as she scored nine straight points to give the Jacks a 12-point cushion at 58-46 with 4:32 to play.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Monica Burich got the Bulldogs back to within 62-58 through three.

Becca Hittner’s 3-pointer to open the final frame cut the SDSU lead to a point, but the Jacks never relinquished the lead.

Myah Selland knocked down a shot and then, Tylee Irwin made a driving two-footer after Hittner again cut the Jacks’ advantage to one with a pair of free throws.

Trailing by three, Sara Rhine scored in the lane to make it 66-65 with 4:36 to go, but Guebert scored twice – the second a trey – to build SDSU’s cushion back to six points at 71-65 inside of 3 minutes.

Following two more Hittner free throws, Irwin buried a 3-pointer for a 74-67 advantage and from there, the Jacks went 6-of-8 from the foul line down the stretch for the nine-point win.

In addition to Guebert’s 21-point night, Selland finished with 16 points; Tagyn Larson and Palmer each added 11; while Macy Miller and Irwin chipped in with nine apiece as the Jacks improved to 7-3 on the season.

Sammie Bachrodt’s 18 points led the Bulldogs, who dropped to 8-2.
