Miller takes title at Yankton Invitational

YANKTON – All five Bobcats to participate placed in the top eight – highlighted by Gus Miller’s title – at the Yankton Invitational on Saturday.

Miller finished on top at 285 pounds.

He pinned Lennox’s Hayden Herlyn in 22 seconds in the first round, Pierre’s Wesley Harsma in 2:29 in the quarterfinals and Tri-Valley’s Ethan Nehlich in 1:53 in the semifinals.

Miller posted an 11-1 major decision over Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Caleb Dagel in the final.

Jaxon Bowes went 4-2 with a win by fall, a decision and a medical forfeit to place fourth at 152.

Tyson Brandt (138 pounds) placed sixth, James Olson (195) was seventh and Miles (106) ended up eighth.

Brandt was 2-3 with a pin and decision. Olson went 3-2 with three pins. Miles finished 2-3 with a major decision and a decision.

Brookings squares off with Brandon Valley and host Harrisburg in a triangular Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Big East/Lake Central Conference Tournament

CLARK – Kingsbury County (107 points) took sixth, Flandreau (59) was ninth and Sioux Valley (28) finished 11th at the Big East/Lake Central Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.

Parker was tops with 164 points and McCook Central/Montrose was second at 143.5.

The Knights’ Dylan Zell (120 pounds) and Gavin Holland (170) both won titles, while Alec Dobson (138) placed third and Ethan Johnson (113) fourth.

Zell opened with back-to-back byes and then pinned MCM’s Lane Huls in 1:02 in the semifinals. Zell edged Elk Point-Jefferson’s Lucas Hueser 2-1 in the final.

Holland also received a double bye to reach to semis, where he pinned Flandreau’s Kolby Peters in 1:13. Holland stuck EPJ’s Gavin Jacobs in 2:30 in the title bout.

The Fliers’ Hunter Witte (106 pounds) and Chase Reed (220) both placed second and Peters was fourth.

Witte pinned Chester Area’s Alfred Frankenhoff in 1:48 in the first round and Elk Point-Jefferson’s Keaton Gale in 5:29 in the quarterfinals before posting an 18-6 major decision over Parker’s Andrew Even in the semifinals. Clark/Willow Lake’s Gunnar Kvistad edged Witte 4-1 in the title bout.

Reed received a first-round bye. He pinned Beresford/Alcester-Hudson’s in 45 seconds in the quarters and tallied a 12-1 major decision over Kingsbury County’s Kain Gilligan in the semis. Parker’s Jesse Walton won via a 14-5 major decision versus Reed in the final.

The Cossacks’ Skylar Trygstad (113 pounds) ended up third and Joe Hornick (160) was fourth.

Trygstad followed a by with an 11-4 decision over CWL’s Joshua Kannegieter. He lost 10-3 to Garretson’s Jayse Miller in the semis before beating Flandreau’s Brayden Wiese 7-2 in a consolation bout. Trygstad pinned Johnson in 1 minute in the third-place matchup.
