BROOKINGS – It was the same old story for the Bobcats in Saturday’s Eastern South Dakota Conference volleyball match against Mitchell – nearly win the first set and then let their opponent build a big lead in Set 2 on the way to a three-set sweep.

The Kernels rallied to win Set 1, 28-26; and then closed the match with 25-19 and 25-13 scores in Sets 2 and 3 at the BHS Auxiliary Gymnasium.

The largest lead either team had in the first set was three points – when Mitchell went up 14-11 following a kill that went off a Bobcat block attempt.

Brookings battled back to tie the score at 15-15 after a service ace by Michaela Jewett.

A double block by Kylie Tucker and Johanna Miller gave the ‘Cats a 17-16 edge and a kill by Kailee Bartels later tied the set at 21-21.

Back-to-back double blocks by Tucker and Grace Eggebrecht pushed Brookings to set point at 26-25 but the Kernels scored three straight points to take the first set, 28-26.

Emma Hardin and Bartels each had a kill to open the second set for a 2-0 Bobcat lead, before Mitchell scored seven in a row to take a five-point lead.

The Kernels opened their lead to 11 points twice – 15-4 and 17-6 – before Brookings started a comeback – putting together a pair of 4-0 runs to get within five points at 20-15.

A kill by Jewett off a setup by Miranda Ysbrand got the ‘Cats within four points at 21-17 but that was as close as they would get as Mitchell went on a 4-2 run to close out Set 2.

Three service aces by Hardin and kill by Annika Johnson gave Brookings a 4-0 lead to open the third set and the Bobcats still led 8-4 following a Tucker kill.

The Kernels went on a 12-1 run to go up 16-9 and then closed out Set 3 – and the match – with a 9-4 run for the sweep.

Johnson finished with 10 kills; Bartels had seven and Eggebrecht six as Jewett tallied 28 set assists.

Tucker had five block assists and Eggebrecht three while Ysbrand collected 13 digs and Alli Gordon had 11.

Brookings, 2-11 overall and 2-9 in the ESD, plays host to Yankton on Tuesday.

The Kernels improved to 16-1 and 10-1 in conference play.
