The Rangers posted a 2-1 record to place third at the Hudson (Wis.) Junior Gold B Tournament over the weekend. On Saturday, Brookings opened play with a 6-3 win over Forest Lake before dropping a 6-1 decision against Burnsville. In Sunday’s third-place game, the Rangers won 4-3 in a shootout over Cloquet.

JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS

The Rangers posted a 2-1 record to place third at the Hudson (Wis.) Junior Gold B Tournament over the weekend. On Saturday, Brookings opened play with a 6-3 win over Forest Lake before dropping a 6-1 decision against Burnsville. In Sunday’s third-place game, the Rangers won 4-3 in a shootout over Cloquet.

Third-Place Game

• Brookings 4, Cloquet 3 (SO)

The Rangers built a 2-0 lead after a period as Noah Drew and Jordan Svobodny both lit the lamp. Kane Kurtenbach and Nick Jonas helped Drew while Kurtenbach and Trevor Pederson set up Svobodny.

Cloquet cut the lead in half with an early second-period goal, but Jonas netted the puck off a Carter Merritt assist to push the Rangers’ advantage to 3-1 with 2:31 left. Cloquet lit the lamp with 10 seconds to play in the period to get within 3-2 heading into the third.

Cloquet scored the only goal of the third period with 1:24 on the clock to send the game into overtime.

After a scoreless overtime, Carter Schulz denied Cloquet on its first chance in the shootout, but the Rangers came up empty, as well. After Cloquet scored on its second opportunity, Kurtenbach leveled the shootout with a goal. Schulz stopped Cloquet’s third attempt, and then, Jonas netted the puck to give the Rangers the win, and third place in the tournament.

Schulz finished with 31 saves as Brookings held a 40-34 edge in shots.

• Burnsville 6, Brookings 1

Burnsville dominated play, outshooting the Rangers, 36-19, as the Minnesota squad scored twice in the first; once in the second; and then, tacked on three in the third for a 6-0 lead.

Jonas lit the lamp off a Merritt assist with less than a minute to play for the final margin.

Schulz collected 30 saves in the loss.

• Brookings 6, Forest Lake 3

Forest Lake drew first blood barely a minute into the game, but Kurtenbach’s unassisted tally less than a minute later tied it at 1-1 before Merritt lit the lamp off a Svobodny setup to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead after one.

Kurtenbach’s goal early in the second pushed the Rangers’ advantage to 3-1 as Jacob Drew picked up the assist. But Forest Lake scored twice just over a minute apart to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the final frame.

Drew scored what would prove to the be the game-winning goal 3 1/2 minutes into the third off a Pederson helper. Svobodny lit the lamp off a Merritt assist to put the Rangers up 5-3, and then, Kurtenbach collected his hat trick with 26 seconds left with an unassisted tally as Schulz earned the win in goal.

JUNIOR VARSITY GIRLS

The Rangers closed their regular season with a 2-1 South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association loss at Aberdeen on Saturday to drop to 9-6 in the league standings. Brookings is tied for second with Sioux Falls as both the Flyers and Rangers have 18 points.

• Aberdeen 2, Brookings 1

After a scoreless first period, the Cougars scored the only goal of the second for a 1-0 advantage heading into the final frame.

The Rangers tied the game with 12:47 to play on Kiran Vugteveen’s goal as Jayda Geraets picked up the assist, but Aberdeen netted the game winner with 3:11 to play.

The Cougars held a 25-15 edge in shots as Heidi Merriman collected 23 saves in the loss.

BANTAM A

The Rangers went 2-0 in league play over the weekend, shutting out Yankton, 12-0, on Saturday before downing Aberdeen, 5-1, on Sunday. Brookings, 11-1-0-1 with 23 points, is in second place in the standings, just two points behind Rushmore.

• Brookings 12, Yankton 0

The Rangers dominated play, outshooting the Miracle, 46-8, while scoring four goals in each period to cruise to the win.

Zach Struck scored three goals in the first period – two coming off of Joseph Wu assists – while Trenton Pederson set up the third. Brody Powers scored the second Ranger goal of the first off a Breck Hirrschoff helper.

In the second, Hirrschoff scored back-to-back goals as Jack Merritt assisted on both before Pederson lit the lamp with a pair of unassisted tallies.

Hirrschoff opened and closed the third-period scoring, while Isaac Schulte and Powers tacked on goals in between. Powers and Merritt set up the first goal while Schulte helped on the final tally. Struck assisted Schulte as Powers netted the puck unassisted.

Kade Brecher stopped all eight shots he faced for the shutout win in goal.

• Brookings 5, Aberdeen 1

Struck lit the lamp off a Pederson assist less than a minute into the game as the Rangers led 1-0 after a period.

Powers netted an unassisted goal early in the second before Hirrschoff scored on a Powers’ pass for a 3-0 lead through two.

Schulte found the back of the net off a Struck setup before Hirrschoff tallied an unassisted goal for a 5-0 advantage, but the Cougars scored late to ruin Brecher’s shutout attempt as he finished with 19 saves in the win.

The Rangers finished with 27 shots on goal.

BANTAM B

The Rangers shut out Sioux Falls (1), 2-0, to improve to 2-7 on the season. Brookings now has four points with six games remaining.

• Brookings 2, Sioux Falls (1) 2

After a scoreless first, Gage Peterson lit the lamp less than 3 minutes into the second off a Geoffrey Svobodny setup to Brookings the early advantage. Spencer Heflin lit the lamp with 28 seconds left in the frame as Peterson picked up the assist for a 2-0 lead heading into the third.

Sioux Falls held an 18-9 advantage in shots as Addison Ronning earned the shutout win in goal.

14U GIRLS

The Rangers posted a 2-3 mark over the weekend as they dropped their first three games – 6-3 to Mitchell; and 9-1 and 6-0 to Aberdeen – before bouncing back with two wins over Sioux Center – 3-0 and 2-1. Brookings is sixth in the league standings with five points, courtesy of a 2-14-1 record.

• Mitchell 6, Brookings 3

Jadyn Kuehl tallied an unassisted goal in the first period as the Rangers trailed 3-1 after one.

Payton Triplett lit the lamp in the second as the Marlins led 4-2 through two.

Kuehl netted her second unassisted goal of the game in the third as Mitchell matched it for the 6-3 final.

The Marlins held a 35-18 edge in shots as Heidi Merriman finished with 29 saves in the loss.

• Aberdeen 9, Brookings 1

The Cougars outshot Brookings, 38-5, as Rorii Quam collected 29 saves in the loss.

Aberdeen led 1-0 after one and 3-0 through two before netting the puck six times in the third.

Ella Park lit the lamp with 12 seconds to play off assists from Maggie Dunbar and Taylor Hokenson to prevent the shutout.

• Aberdeen 6, Brookings 0

The Cougars scored once in the first; three times in the second; and then, tacked on two in the third for the shutout as Aletha Baker had 29 saves in the loss as Aberdeen held a 35-4 advantage in shots.

• Brookings 3, Sioux Center 0

Graciana Peterson opened the scoring off a Kuehl assist before Kuehl lit the lamp off a Dunbar helper as the Rangers led 2-0 after a period.

Kayla Shoup lit the lamp in the second period as Libby Merritt set up the goal.

Brookings held a 43-6 edge in shots as Quam earned her first shutout of the season with six saves.

• Brookings 2, Sioux Center 1

The Storm led 1-0 after one, but the Rangers scored twice in the second and then held on for their second win of the season.

Kuehl tied the game off a Merritt assist before Miyah Foerster scored the game-winning goal with Dunbar picking up the helper.

Merriman notched 11 saves as Brookings outshot Sioux Center, 35-12.

SQUIRT A

The Rangers split a pair of games against Sioux Falls on Jan. 20 as they shut out the Flyers, 2-0, before falling 4-2 in the second game of the day at Larson Ice Center.

• Brookings 2, Sioux Falls 0

Cooper Schneider tallied a pair of unassisted goals – one in the first and one in the second – as Matthew Bothe stopped all 14 Flyer shots that he faced for the win in net.

• Sioux Falls 4, Brookings 2

Schneider lit the lamp with an unassisted goal as the game was even at 1-1 after a period.

Denver Qiao found the back of the net off a Gavin Loy helper as the teams heading into the final frame tied at 2-2.

The Flyers scored twice in the third for the final as Bothe collected 14 saves in the loss.
