Ranger JV wins two SDAHA games, moves into 4th in standings

JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS

The Rangers posted a pair of league wins over the weekend – beating Huron, 3-2, on Saturday before downing Oahe, 4-1, on Sunday.

Brookings moved into fourth in the SDAHA standings with 16 points, courtesy of its 8-4 mark.

The Rangers play host to Yankton on Saturday at Larson Ice Center.

• Brookings 4, Oahe 1

The Rangers scored three goals in the first, and then, added one in the second before the All-Stars spoiled the shutout with an early third-period tally.

Luc Bouchard opened the scoring less than 3 minutes into the match as Trevor Berreth picked up the assist.

Nick Jonas lit the lamp off another Berreth setup, and then, Jackson Law netted the puck with an unassisted goal for the 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Carter Merritt tallied an unassisted goal just 35 seconds into the second period for a 4-0 advantage through two.

Ashton Griese netted an unassisted goal for the Capitals 2 minutes into the third for the final margin as Brookings held a 45-12 edge in shots with Carter Schulz picking up the win in net with 11 saves.

• Brookings 3, Huron 2

The Rangers led 1-0 after a period on Noah Drew’s goal off a Jonas setup, but Huron answered with a pair of second-period tallies to lead 2-1 with a period to play.

Jacob Drew tied the game 2 minutes into the final frame with the assist going to Merritt, and then, Bouchard tallied the unassisted game-winning goal with 37 seconds left.

Brookings outshot the All-Stars, 44-18, as Schulz earned the W with 16 saves.

BANTAM A

The Bantam A Rangers went 4-1 over the weekend to place third in the Buffalo Wild Wings Woodchipper Tournament in Fargo.

Brookings opened with a 3-0 shutout of Mandan; beat MBA Storm, 4-2; and then, the Rangers downed Thief River Falls, 5-2. In Sunday’s semifinal, St. Cloud bested Brookings, 5-2, but the Rangers bounced back with a 4-1 win over Bismarck to claim third.

• Brookings 4, Bismarck 1

Breck Hirrschoff spotted the Rangers a 1-0 lead after one as Jack Merritt earned the assist.

Hirrschoff added another goal in the second off an Isaac Dobesh setup, and then, he netted his hat trick goal in the third off a Brody Powers’ helper. Isaac Schulte provided for the final margin with a power-play goal off assists from Zach Struck and Powers.

Kade Brecher finished with 17 saves as Brookings held a 48-18 edge in shots.

• St. Cloud 5, Brookings 3

St. Cloud led 1-0 after a period and then tacked on four in the second for a 5-2 advantage through two on the way to the semifinal win.

Schulte and Struck netted second-period goals for the Rangers as Trenton Pederson set up both scores.

Schulte added a third-period goal with an unassisted tally with Brecher stopping 17 shots as Brookings outshot St. Cloud, 30-22.

• Brookings 5, Thief River Falls 2

Dobesh and Struck lit the lamp in the first period with Schulte assisting on both goals as the Rangers led 2-1 after one.

Hirrschoff netted the puck off a Miles Merhib setup before Powers tallied an unassisted goal to give Brookings a 4-2 edge through two.

Pederson’s third-period goal provided for the final margin as Merritt and Hirrschoff earned assists.

Brecher collected 13 saves as the Rangers held a 32-15 advantage in shots.

• Brookings 4, MBA Storm 2

Merritt netted a late goal off a Merhib assist as the teams skated to a 1-1 tie after a period.

Powers netted an unassisted goal early in the second before Pederson lit the lamp off a Hirrschoff setup as Brookings led 3-1 through two.

In the third period, Hirrschoff scored his second goal of the game off a Merritt assist for the final margin.

Brecher finished with 25 saves as the Storm outshot the Rangers, 27-23.

• Brookings 3, Mandan 0

After a scoreless first period, Powers netted the puck off assists from Hirrschoff and Merritt for a 1-0 lead through two.

Struck and Merritt lit the lamp in the third as Pederson and Hirrschoff earned the respective assists.

Brecher stopped all 15 shots he faces as the Rangers outshot Mandan, 41-15.

PEEWEE A

The Rangers dominated play – outshooting the Lakers, 37-10 – in a 12-0 whitewash on Sunday.

Ren Jacobsen and Chase Karch scored first-period goals as Owen Schneider assisted on both.

In the second, Brookings exploded for seven goals – two by Jacob Kahle; two by Schneider; two by Jacob Peterson; and one by Jacobsen – as Luke Honkomp, Schneider (2), Kahle (2) and Jacobsen all picked up assists.

The Rangers tacked on three goals in the third – one by Riley Linstad and two by Cody Jacobson – as Schneider tallied two more assists, while Cooper Deatherage picked up two and Kahle and Aidan Austreim earned one apiece.

Egan Jensen stopped all 10 shots that he faced for the shutout win in goal.

PEEWEE B

The Rangers rallied with three goals in the third period to down Sioux Falls Orange on Saturday.

Orange led 4-2 after a period as Talon Hyde tallied an unassisted goal and Jay Harris lit the lamp off a Koen Beinhorn assist.

Hyde tacked on two more unassisted goals in the second as Sioux Falls led 6-4 through two.

Waylon Carroll opened the third-period scoring off a Tre Christopherson setup before Jackson Heller lit the lamp to tie the game at 6-6 with Hyde and Gerritt Kass providing the assists. Hyde scored his fourth unassisted goal of the game with 4:01 to play for the game winner.

Brayden Bingham finished with 12 saves as Brookings held a 31-18 edge in shots.
