BROOKINGS – South Dakota State built an incredible 90-33 halftime lead while beating Savannah State 139-72 in a men’s basketball game Tuesday night at Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits eclipsed the single-game mark for points and buried a school-record 23 3-pointers on 34 attempts.

“I’m certainly pleased with how our guys shared the ball; that’s what really stood out to me on the offensive end and what led to some of the gaudy numbers and opportunities that we had,” said SDSU coach T.J. Otzelberger. “We knew coming in they’re a team that plays at a really fast pace, they shoot it quick. We saw in those first three possessions where they banged 3s on us how they can get it going. So I think once the game settled in we did a great job.

“But overall, I’m proud of our guys; their effort; sharing the ball – Tevin King stands out, obviously, 13 assists, no turnovers; Owen King off the bench, six assists, no turnovers. When you have numbers like that, things are going to go your way.”

The Jackrabbits went 35-of-46 (76.1 percent) from the field over the first 20 minutes, including a sizzling 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from downtown.

Daum had a double-double of 26 points and 12 rebounds at halftime, as he finished with 37 and 17 in 28 minutes.

The senior, who moved from 63rd to 47th on the NCAA Division I career scoring list with 2,546 points, said he had never been a part of a game like that.

“It’s really unbelievable what we did,” he added. “I think our mindset going into the game of just how we wanted to play for each other that whole game really showed. It just really showed with how well we passed the ball, how well we found each other – you know, extra-pass 3s always go in.”

Tevin King narrowly missed a triple-double with 10 points, a Division I-era school-record 13 assists and nine rebounds.

Skyler Flatten dropped in 18 of his career-high 29 points in the opening half, finishing 6-of-7 from deep. David Jenkins hit eight treys and scored 20 of his 28 points in the first half.

Savannah State (3-8) entered the night averaging an NCAA Division-I high 44.9 3-point attempts per game while surrendering 96.1 points per contest.

The Tigers went 12-of-52 on 3s against the Jackrabbits. Jaquan Dotson posted a double-double of 17 points and 11 boards.

South Dakota State (9-3) takes on seventh-ranked Nevada (10-0) on Saturday at 8 p.m. in Reno.

Notes: The previous SDSU record for points in a game came during a 136-80 defeat of Midland Lutheran on Dec. 14, 1990. ... The Jackrabbits pushed their home winning streak to 26 games. … The NCAA DI record for points in a half is 98.
