TOLEDO, Ohio – The South Dakota State volleyball team improved to 6-2 overall after a 2-1 weekend at the Blue and Gold Tournament hosted by the University of Toledo.

TOLEDO, Ohio – The South Dakota State volleyball team improved to 6-2 overall after a 2-1 weekend at the Blue and Gold Tournament hosted by the University of Toledo. After falling to Toledo in five sets on Friday, the Jackrabbits defeated Youngstown State in five sets and swept Valparaiso on Saturday.
Saturday
• SDSU 3, Youngstown State 2
The two teams split the first two sets with the Penguins winning the first 25-23 and the Jacks taking the second 25-20. SDSU would win the third set 25-21, but YSU extended the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth set. The Jacks won the decisive fifth set 15-12.
SDSU had 70 kills and 65 assists. The Jacks had 82 digs and eight blocks defensively.
Senior Crystal Burk led the Jacks with 23 kills and 20 digs. Graduate senior Chloe Stitt also had a double-double with 18 kills and 13 digs. Senior Hailee Blau had 12 kills and freshman Ella Thompson had 10. Freshman Faith Saewart had 23 digs and junior Carly Wedel had 63 of SDSU’s 65 assists.
• SDSU 3, Valparaiso 0
The Jacks had a much easier second game Saturday. SDSU won in three sets by the score of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-23.
Burk led the Jacks once again with 18 kills and eight digs. Wedel had 12 digs and 34 assists. Junior Akeela Jefferson had 10 digs. Stitt had eight kills and Blau and Thompson each had six.
SDSU had 39 kills and 49 digs as a team.
Friday
• Toledo 3, SDSU 2
SDSU nudged out a 25-23 win in set one. Toledo would respond with a 25-15 win in set two. The two teams then split the third and fourth sets with the Jacks taking the third 25-23 and Toledo winning the fourth 25-22. The Rockets then won the final set 15-12.
Stitt led the Jacks 20 kills and eight digs. Burk had 16 kills and 11 digs. Saewart had 17 digs and Wedel had 47 assists. Blau and Thompson each had seven kills.
The Jacks will return home this weekend to host the Jackrabbit Classic. They will face Southeastern Louisiana at 11 a.m. and Idaho at 7 p.m. on Friday. SDSU will close out the tournament with Drake at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
