Seven set state-meet qualifying marks at Barnes-Evans Relays

FLANDREAU – Although no team points were kept at Tuesday’s Barnes-Evans Relays, several individuals took advantage of a perfect opening day for outdoor track and field.

Colman-Egan’s Walker Olivier won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.38 seconds, eclipsing the Class B State Meet hand-held qualifying mark of 16.3 by nearly a second. Olivier’s winning time of 43.59 in the 300 hurdles was barely 1/2 a second off the hand-held qualifying standard of 42.9 seconds.

Olivier’s teammates – Cole Kriech and Kade Groos – beat the hand-held qualifying standard of 52.4 seconds in the 400-meter dash with their respective first- and second-place times of 51.66 and 51.84 seconds, while Hawk freshman Devin Lohr won the 200 in 23.83, just .23 off the qualifying standard of 23.6.

Teammate Malik Poppenga qualified for the state triple jump as his winning mark of 40 feet, 8 3/4 inches bettered the standard of 40-1. Poppenga also won the high jump (5-6) and long jump (18-2.75).

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland’s Riston Wolf’s winning put of 44-11.5 inches clipped the qualifying mark of 44-8, while teammate Bennet Trygstad wasn’t far behind with his second-place mark of 44-6.75.

Wolf also won the 100 dash in 11.85 seconds while Trygstad’s winning discus throw of 133-10 was just five inches off the state qualifying standard.

Another double event winner was Connor Libis of Dell Rapids St. Mary. The Cardinal eighth-grader won the 800-meter run in 2:19.51 and the 1,600 in 5:08.43 while Elkton-Lake Benton seventh-grader Miles Harming won the 3,200 in 11:26.83.

The Cossacks won three of the five boys’ relays – the 4x100, 4x200 and sprint medley. Tyge Schiller, Nick Strasburg, Tayt Vincent and Cole Gross ran on both the 4x200 and sprint medley.

The Hawks’ foursome of Bodee Groos, Olivier, Poppenga and Kade Groos won the 4x400 while ORR’s Jack Olson, Connor Spilde, Peyton Roti and Casey Renass teamed to win the 4x800.

On the girls’ side, Sioux Valley’s Lynsey Stevens won all three jumps – tying with teammate Nikole Ziegler in the high jump as both cleared 5-1 in the high jump to surpass the 4-11 Class A qualifying mark; leaping 15-1.75 in the long jump; and going 33-5.25 in the triple jump.

Flandreau’s Ashtyn Bertram won both short sprints, crossing in 13.34 seconds in the 100 and 28.06 seconds in the 200, as Madie Hursey won both the 1,600 (5:53.35) and 3,200 (12:45.39).

St. Mary’s Ella Heinitz won both the 400 (1:02.65) and 800 (2:34.52) while Colman-Egan’s Mackenzie Hemmer won both hurdle races, clocking an 18.57 in the 100 and a 54.04 in the 300.

Howard won the throwing events as Hilary Albrecht won the shot with a put of 34-6.5 and Bailey Rudebusch won the discus with a throw of 106-2.

The Hawk quartet of Katie Hannasch, Hemmer, Elizabeth Moore and Olivia Baumberger won the 4x100 relay while Flandreau’s Kylie Bertram, Hannah Parsley, Cassidy Keith and Ashtyn Bertram teamed to win the 4x200.

St. Mary’s Christina Vogel, Tana Harrington, Cassy Geraets and Heinitz won the 4x800 while Howard won both the 4x400 and sprint medley relays.

The Tigers’ Presley Claussen, Saddie Palmquist, Citori Rentz and Ellen Lewis ran the medley while the first three also ran the 4x400.
