GARRETSON – Six Fliers earned their way to the medal round at the annual Jesse James Invitational Wrestling tournament Saturday.

“Six wrestlers on the podium, and as a team, we slid into sixth place,” said Head Coach Sam Baier.

Chamberlain took the team title with 153 points with Elk Point-Jefferson second at 129 edging out Tri-Valley’s at 128. Beresford/Alcester-Hudson was fourth, 105, Groton Area, fifth at 101 and the Fliers sixth with 94 points.

Senior Tathan Headrick was the lone champion earning the 152 pound title. Younger brother, Karter, was runner-up at 160; Brayden Wiese, Caleb Dietrich and Chase Reed at 120, 182 and 220 respectively, were all third place finishers and 182 pound Caleb Pitsenberger took fourth.

A highlight on the day was senior Chase Reed capturing his 100th career win.

“Congratulations to him. It was such a cool moment for him to be able to share that with his friends and family there,” said Baier.

En route to his title, Tathan Headrick won by fall against his three opponents. He opened with a 3:17 fall over Jozey Nesladek of Chamberlain, a 48 second pin of Korbin Kucker of Groton Area and a 4:59 third period pin over Owen Eitenmiller from M/F/FA/C/M for the title.

Freshman Karter Headrick pinned Luverne’s Jaden Reisch in 1:22 and M/F/FA/C/M’s Tim Epp, 2:44. In the title match, he lost in a 5-1 decision to Groton Area’s Cole Bisbee to take runner-up.

Wiese lost his first round to the eventual champ, Gunner Ewing of EP-J in a 6-2 decision and then won his way through the wrestlebacks to take third.

Dietrich’s third place finish came in four-man bracket which also had a forfeit. He lost to Aaron Larson of B/A-H, 11-6, and to Gavin Jacobs of EP-J, 3:54.

Reed began with a 1:14 fall over Chamberlain’s Wyatt Powers and then lost to Lane Krueger of Groton Area by a 4:22 fall. Flandreau’s Thomas Loehr was wrestling unattached and faced the Flier senior in the wreslebacks. Reed won by a 42 second fall. He next won over Alex Jensen of B/A-H pinning him in 2:52.

Pitsenberger won his opener in a 1:30 fall over Jaksen Olson of V-H, but then lost to Mason Hendrickson of TV in the second period, 3:44. The Flier came back and defeated Jacob Madison of Luverne, 2:17 to match him with Chamberlain’s Swade Reis who took the third place match by a 5-1 decision.

Other Fliers in the tournament were Dylan Christenson who was 1-2, Teague Bergjord, Justin Klein, Owen Peters and Thomas Loehr, all 0-2.

“A lot of little things cost us some matches I thought we could’ve won,” said Baier.

Tuesday, the wrestlers were to be in Inwood, IA for a quad with Parker, Parkston and West Lyon and then Saturday, at the Tri-Valley tourney beginning at 10 am.
