PIERRE – The matchup of the top two football teams in Class 11AA ended in a familiar fashion for the Governors, as Pierre beat Brookings 54-6 on Friday night.

The two-time defending 11AA state champions pushed their win streak to 11 games.

Quarterback Garrett Stout ran for three touchdowns, threw for one and added a kick return to paydirt.

Pierre received the opening kickoff but was stopped on fourth-and-6 at the Bobcat 30.

However, a botched handoff two plays later saw Gunnar Gehring pounce on the fumbleat the B26 to set the Govs up with solid field position.

Three plays later, Stout kept it up the gut for a 3-yard score.

Stout went untouched up the middle for a 13-yard score 26 seconds into the next period to cap an 11-play, 78-yard drive.

His 4-yard run midway through the stanza made it 20-0.

Maguire Raske got in on the action with a 23-yard scoring scamper.

Stout found Zach Letellier for a 5-yard score 6 seconds before halftime to push the margin to 33-0.

Pierre posted its sixth first-half shutout in seven games. The Govs have allowed just six points in the opening 24 minutes this year.

The second half opened with a bang as the home team again received the kickoff following a coin-flip miscue for the ‘Cats.

Raske went 91 yards to the end zone to get it going.

Brookings’ Carter Eidem capped a four-play, 64-yard drive with a 6-yard TD rush soon thereafter for the visitors’ lone score.

Stout received the ensuing kickoff and raced 90 yards for a touchdown. It was his second house call in as many returns this season.

Andrew Coverdale picked off a pass on the next play to set Pierre up with a short field; however, the Governors turned the ball over on downs.

Raske had a 38-yard TD scamper with 10:29 remaining.

Stout has now had a hand in 41 touchdowns this season – 22 passing, 16 rushing, two kick returns (on two attempts) and one pick-six.

The game marked a likely preview of the Class 11A title game, which will be contested Nov. 14 at noon at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings.

The Bobcats (6-1) are host to Spearfish next week at 6 p.m. and then plays at Yankton the following Thursday to conclude the regular season.

The Governors (7-0) play at Mitchell and at Douglas to wrap things up.
