SIOUX FALLS – Robert Rosenquist dropped in 28 points as Dakota Valley upended top-seeded Sioux Valley 85-79 in overtime during a Sweet 16 boys’ basketball matchup Tuesday night at the Sanford Pentagon’s Heritage Court.

The 5-foot-11 senior went 7-of-15 from the field, hitting one 3-pointer, and 13-of-14 at the free-throw line. He grabbed eight rebounds.

Rosenquist scored 10 of the Panthers’ 20 fourth-quarter points.

Tayt Vincent capped an outstanding high school career by totaling 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Cossacks. He went 8-of-15 from downtown.

The school’s all-time leader in points, assists, steals and 3-pointers buried a contested trey from the right wing with 1 second left in regulation to tie things up at 75-all.

Rosenquist hit a pair of foul shots midway through the extra period, but Zack Puetz’s 3 gave Sioux Valley a 78-77 lead with 1:43 to go.

John Prochello, a 6-7 senior, put Dakota Valley on top for good with a short jumper at the 1:31 mark. He scored again in the paint with 59 seconds left to make it 81-78.

The Cossacks came up empty on the other end and Jack McCabe pushed the margin to 83-78 via a pair of charity tosses with 19 seconds remaining.

“It was a great game between two great teams,” said Sioux Valley coach Bill Vincent. “You know, we sat in the State A Tournament last year and instantly called Dakota Valley a favorite to win it this year. Whatever led to their slow start (to the season), they’re here now and they’re ready to go.”

The Cossacks hit 18 3-pointers on 44 attempts in the game, including six in the opening quarter. But the Panthers countered with a strong period on the offensive end as the score was 23-21 after 8 minutes.

Sioux Valley led 42-36 at halftime and 61-55 through three.

Treys by Tanner Smith and Luke Schmitt pulled Dakota Valley even 84 seconds into the final frame.

The Cossacks countered with a 5-0 spurt as Vincent connected from deep and Trevor Hanson had a two-handed slam.

But the 16th-seeded Panthers continued to hang around and make plays on the offensive end.

Prochello’s free throws with 50 seconds showing on the clock closed the gap to 72-71. Rosenquist scored on a tough take to the hoop with 27 seconds to go.

After Dakota Valley came up with a stop on defense, Rosenquist was fouled and made both freebies to make it 75-72 with 7 seconds left.

Sioux Valley set up a sideline inbounds play from in front of its bench with 4 seconds left. Vincent got some room on the sideline and hit a tough 3 to force overtime.

“It hurts, because you know you belong (at state) as well as them, but we’re going to celebrate a season and one heck of a career by our seniors and our team,” Vincent added. “We’ve had a lot of good teams, and this is one of the greatest that we’ve had. Offensively, they were a show every night out; fun for the fans to watch.

“We just needed to make one or two more plays down the stretch here and we would have been there.”

McCabe added 19 points and seven boards for the Panthers. Schmitt contributed 13 points and Prochello 11. Tanner Smith dished out six assists.

The Panthers shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53), including a 10-of-19 clip from long range.

Dakota Valley (12-10) is the No. 8 seed in the Class A State Boys’ Basketball Tournament and faces top-seeded Madison on Thursday, March 16, at noon at the PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.

For Sioux Valley, Hanson had 17 points and eight rebounds. Max Nielson hit four treys for 12 points. Trevor Olson and Puetz chipped in with eight markers apiece. Nielson also dished out six assists and Puetz five.

The Cossacks finished the season with a 19-3 record.

It marked the final game in a Sioux Valley uniform for the Augustana-bound Vincent, Puetz, Nick Strasburg and Cole Gross.

“These seniors got a chance to experience the state tournament as freshmen and juniors, so they’ve been there,” Vincent said. "So yeah, it hurts but we’re going to celebrate some guys that had great careers and a great season.”
