Tupak Kpeayeh leads Warriors past Bobcats, 27-7

SIOUX FALLS – The Bobcat defense received a steady diet of Tupak Kpeayeh on Friday night at Howard Wood Field.

And unfortunately for Brookings, it resulted in a 27-7 Sioux Falls Washington win as the 5-9, 185-pound senior running back rolled up 245 yards on 39 carries and all four Warrior touchdowns.

A fumble on the Bobcats’ second series of downs gave Washington a short field and the home team took advantage of that miscue, going 29 yards in five plays as Kpeayeh went in from 4 yards out with 1:23 to play in the first quarter.

Freddy Frederic kicked the first of three successful PATs to take the early 7-0 lead.

Brookings put together a seven-play, 64-yard scoring drive two series later to tie the game when Jacob Schoon connected with Jay Wilber on a 12-yard scoring strike and Justin Devine kicked the PAT with 7:11 to play in the half.

Schoon hooked up with Wilber for 28 yards early in the drive and Carter Eidem broke off a 28-yard run to get the ‘Cats into the red zone.

But the Warriors answered on their next drive to take a 14-7 lead into halftime.

Jayden Johannsen found Tyus Hansen on a 26-yard route before connecting with Dillon Madsen for another 24 yards to loosen up the Brookings defense. Then it was back to Kpeayeh, who rumbled in from 6 yards out with 4:36 left.

Washington got the ball to start the second half and needed just seven plays to go 80 yards to pad its lead. Johnnsen passed once on the drive – a 22-yard completion to Gabe Person – other than that, it was Kpeayeh for the rest of the yardage as he scored on a 19-yard run with 9:08 on the clock in the third. Frederic’s kick made it 21-7.

The ‘Cats had to punt on their first possession of the second half, but Jackson Krogman intercepted a Johannsen pass and returned it 13 yards to give Brookings the ball near midfield.

The Bobcats came up empty, though, turning the ball over on downs when a fourth-and-12 pass went incomplete.

The Warriors fumbled on their second play from scrimmage and Brookings recovered the loose ball at the Washington 46-yard line.

A false start penalty forced the ‘Cats into a third-and-14 from the Warrior 29 and Brookings turned the ball over on downs after two incomplete passes.

Kpeayeh ran the ball on eight of Washington’s next nine plays – a 22-yard pass from Johannsen to Jacob Smith was mixed in that got the Warriors to the Bobcat 23 – and the workhorse plunged in from 2 yards out to make it 27-7 with 8:56 remaining as Frederic’s PAT kick was blocked.

Brookings moved the ball from its own 30 to the Washington 18 on its next series, but turned the ball over on downs when Schoon was sacked on a fourth-and-nine play inside of 2 minutes.

The Warriors knelt to run out the clock as they improved to 4-2 on the season.

Carter Eidem finished with 124 rushing yards on 28 carries for the Bobcats, who dropped to 3-3.

Brookings is on the road again next week, taking on Eastern South Dakota Conference foe Harrisburg at Tiger Stadium in a 7 p.m. contest.

The Tigers lost 35-33 to the Arrows in Watertown last night to fall to 3-3.
