BROOKINGS – The Wilderness scored three times in the third period to break a 2-2 deadlock en route to a 5-3 Central Division win over the Blizzard on Saturday night at Larson Ice Center.
The Wilderness led 2-0 before Josh Boyer lit the lamp for the home team with 22 seconds to play in the first period off assists from Vince Marino and Carson Kosobud to make it 2-1 after one.
Kosobud cashed in on a power-play chance less than 6 minutes into the second period to knot the score at 2-2 through two as Doug Larson and Boyer earned the assists.
But the visitors took the lead for good less than 5 minutes into the final frame, and then, added a pair of insurance goals – the final on an empty net – for a 5-2 lead with 4:12 left. Larson provided for the final margin when he netted the puck with 22 seconds to play off an Aird assist.
The Wilderness held a 25-22 edge in shots as Adam Brizgala finished with 20 saves on the 24 shots that he faced in the loss while Ryan Fanti collected 19 saves in the win.
The loss drops Brookings to 18-24-2-4 overall with 42 points and last place in the division while the Wilderness sit in third place with 55 points, courtesy of a 25-18-2-3 mark.
The Blizzard play host to fifth-place Minot in a pair of games this weekend. The puck drops at 7:05 both Friday and Saturday night at LIC.
